  • The Battle of Gettysburg

    Frank Aretas Haskell

Hardcover (Wisonsin History Commission, March 15, 1908)
Frank Haskell (1828-1864) was in the 36th Wisconsin Infantry, a Lieutenant and an aide to Union General John Gibbon in the Civil War. He played a crucial role on the third day of the battle, after Confederates breached the wall. General Gibbon wrote of him "I have always thought that to him, more than to any one man, are we indebted for the repulse of Lee's assault." This book is a long letter to his brother about the battle, written shortly after its conclusion. It was printed originally as a short pamphlet, then as a book edited with changes by Daniel Hall in 1898. Hall omitted passages that seemed to reflect poorly on General Sickles. Hall's version was reprinted in 1908. This edition of 2500 copies published as "Reprint No.1" by the Wisconsin History Commission, also in 1908, is the full original text. It is the first of several volumes of reprints of historical documents related to Wisconsin, a 'reprint' of the original pamphlet before editing

Paperback (Leopold Classic Library, May 31, 2016)
About the Book The American Civil War, which broke out in 1861, was fought over the Confederate States' wish to continue the practice of slavery, and the Union's wish to preserve the union. As to population and resources, the Confederate States were out-matched by the Union on a factor of 2 to 3 times on most indicators. By 1865 some 620,000 people had been killed, making this the most costly war in US history.About us Leopold Classic Library has the goal of making available to readers the classic books that have been out of print for decades. While these books may have occasional imperfections, we consider that only hand checking of every page ensures readable content without poor picture quality, blurred or missing text etc. That's why we: republish only hand checked books; that are high quality; enabling readers to see classic books in original formats; that are unlikely to have missing or blurred pages. THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG1THE GREAT battle of Gettysburg is now an event of the past. The composition and strength of the armies, their leaders, the strategy, the tactics, the result, of that field are to-day by the side of those of Waterloo-matters of history. A few days ago these things were otherwise. This great event did not so "cast its shadow before," as to moderate the hot sunshine that streamed upon our preceding march, or to relieve our minds of all apprehension of the result of the second great Rebel invasion of the soil North of the Potomac.1 Upon the Portage Public Library's copy of the original pamphlet edition, Hon. A. J. Turner wrote the following explanatory note:" The within description of the ' The Battle of Gettysburg' was written by Colonel Frank A. Haskell who was on the staff of General John Gibbon, to his brother at Portage, Wisconsin. • Battle of Gettysburg

Col. Frank A. Haskell, Frank A. Haskell

Paperback (Chapman Billies, Jan. 1, 1993)
Col. Haskell wrote the first and, according to many authorities, the best eyewitness account of the most pivotal event in American history. His unique position and duties required him to be in many sectors during the three-day battle. Born in Tunbridge,Vermont, Haskell joined a law firm in Madison, Wisconsin after graduating from Dartmouth in 1854. In 1861 he enlisted in the Sixth Wisconsin Volunteers. He was Aide-decamp to General John Gibbon, the Commander of Second Corps at Gettysburg. Within a few weeks after the battle, he wrote his brother in Portage,Wisconsin, this accurate and very moving account of what he had experienced. Col. Haskell was killed in action on June 3, 1864 at Cold Harbor,Virginia. "HaskellÂ’s long letter on the conflict lives as a classic narrative." --Allan Nevins,The War for the Union
