Maple Wafflehoffer lives in Waffleville with her Mama, Papa, and brother named Zack. Maple being six years old, decides she's now old enough to uphold the family tradition and enter the waffle baking competition held at the yearly county fair. While at the festival, the school bully, Priscilla Fry, comes into the waffle-baking tent and puts on her apron. Priscilla Fry won last year's competition and the year before. Maple pours the flour into her mixing bowl and beats in the eggs and milk, then folds in the blueberries for color and taste, to make the best waffles she has ever made. All while keeping her fingers crossed, hoping she wins first place and upholds her family tradition. Unfortunately, Maple comes in second place, losing to Priscilla Fry, who teases Maple about losing. Maple is sad at first then looks across the tent at her family, who are cheering and clapping. Maple smiles at them, knowing that coming in second place isn't that bad, especially for the first time at entering the competition. Maple proudly excepts her second-place ribbon, knowing that she could always win first place when she enters the baking competition next year.
