Excerpt from Washington's Young Aids: A Story of the New Jersey Campaign, 1776-1777I have endeavored in this story to give my readers a reason ably correct picture of the struggle in New Jersey during the campaign of 1776 - 7. The old records have given me authority for the setting of all portions of the story; for there is nothing recorded here for which a counterpart in history cannot be found.The messengers General Washington sent to General Lee, the retreat and advance of the patriot forces, the life on the prison ships and in the prison-houses of New York, the raids of the pine robbers, the tempting of, the Hessians, the end of Fagan and his band, are all taken from the records, and there is nothing in the story which might not have occurred in the struggle.I have endeavored also to be true to the character of the lead ers, and have written nothing concerning Washington, Greene, Mercer, Knox, Glover, and others, on the one side, and Lee and Gates on the other, that history does not warrant. The incidents of home-life, of the struggles of the women and children who were left to defend themselves as best they could, of the privations, bravery, and heroism of those who never went upon a battlefield, have been too much neglected. The men who shouldered their muskets, and at the peril of their lives went forth to meet the foe, are not likely to be forgotten but the no less heroic deeds of those who were left behind are Ofttimes slighted. We have studied the battlefields sometimes to the exclusion of the lives of the men and the women.The author in putting forth these stories con fesses to one grave fear. He would not in any way enkindle today a feeling of hatred towards the mother country. There are too many reasons why the relations between the two lands should be, and should continue to be, friendly, for him in any way to try to keep alive the feelings which prevailed during the Revolution. The Boys of Old Monmouth. by Mr. Everett T. Tomlinson. is a story of George Washington‘s campaign in New Jersey in 1778, in which many of the Revolutionary leaders figure prominently. "The Child-Study Monthly," edited by William O. Krohn, Ph.D., Volume IV, 1889, page 445 said, “This is one of the best books for boys that we have ever read. It is the best book for boys that we have seen this holiday season. The book contains a faithful account of the movements of the opposing armies that culminated in the famous battle of Old Monmouth in the Revolutionary War. It is not, on this account, dry history. It is interesting to the point of fascination. It abounds with incidents and adventure of the healthful sort, taken from early records and family traditions. No book has come so near giving a true picture of the sufferings, heroism, privations and struggles of the men and women of Old Monmouth than whom there were none braver or wrought more valiantly for their country."
