  • Science Experiments and Amusements for Children

    Charles Vivian

Paperback (Dover Publications, June 1, 1967)
The 73 scientific experiments described in this book can easily be done by children on their own, without the supervision of a parent or teacher. Explicit directions are given for each step, and the only equipment required can be found around the house. By working with such simple materials as steel wool, cotton, candles, eye-dropper, compass, cork, rubber tubing, coins and magnets, the young experimenter will become acquainted with dozens of the basic principles of physics, chemistry, mechanics, engineering, and many other fields.Following the step-by-step instructions, a child can learn to make an air-screw, mariner's compass, simple siphon, pinhole camera, thermometer, invisible ink, simple electric motor, periscope, boomerang, 3-D viewer, and many other interesting things. The exercises and demonstrations also show how to burn steel, find a center of gravity, make a vacuum with a radish, electrify a bubble, reflect sound, make water denser, compress air under water, carry a column of water, make a liquid sandwich, watch a pulse at work, etc. Each article gives some background information along with an explanation of why the experiment works the way it does.Over 100 photographs show children performing the experiments, and numerous line drawings depict the materials used, the set-up of equipment, and the desired result.

  • A History of Aeronautics

Paperback (Forgotten Books, June 18, 2012)
Excerpt from A History of AeronauticsIn this work is no claim to originality - it has been a matter mainly of compilation, and some stories, notably those of the Wright Brothers and of Santos Dumont, are better told in the words of the men themselves than any third party could tell them. The author claims, however, that this is the first attempt at recording the facts of development and stating, as fully as is possible in the compass of a single volume, how flight and aerostation have evolved. The time for a critical history of the subject is not yet.In the matter of illustrations, it has been found very difficult to secure suitable material. Even the official series of photographs of aeroplanes in the war period is curiously incomplete, and the methods of censorship during that period prevented any complete series being privately collected. Omissions in this respect will probably be remedied in future editions of the work, as fresh material is constantly being located.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A History of Aeronautics is a classic aviation history text by E. Charles Vivian. The blending of fact and fancy which men call legend reached its fullest and richest expression in the golden age of Greece, and thus it is to Greek mythology that one must turn for the best form of any legend which foreshadows history. Yet the prevalence of legends regarding flight, existing in the records of practically every race, shows that this form of transit was a dream of many peoples--man always wanted to fly, and imagined means of flight.

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, May 6, 2014)
A History of Aeronautics by E. Charles VivianThe Evolution of the Aeroplane. The history of aviation has extended over more than two thousand years from the earliest kites and attempts at tower jumping to supersonic, and hypersonic flight by powered, heavier-than-air jets.Kite flying in China dates back to several hundred years BC and is thought to be the earliest example of man-made flight. Some kites were capable of carrying a man into the air. The ancient Chinese also flew small hot-air lanterns and bamboo-copter toys with spinning rotors.Leonardo da Vinci's 15th-century dream of flight found expression in several rational but unscientific designs, though he did not attempt to construct any of them.Efforts to analyze the atmosphere from the 17th to 19th centuries led to the discovery of gases such as hydrogen, which in turn led to the invention of hydrogen balloons. Various theories in mechanics by physicists during the same period of time, notably fluid dynamics and Newton's laws of motion, led to the foundation of modern aerodynamics. Tethered balloons filled with hot air were used in the first half of the 19th century and saw considerable action in several mid-century wars, most notably the American Civil War, where balloons provided observation during the Battle of Petersburg. The term aviation, noun of action from stem of Latin avis "bird" was coined in 1863 by French aviation pioneer Guillaume Joseph Gabriel de La Landelle (1812–1886) in "Aviation ou Navigation aerienne".Experiments with gliders provided the groundwork for heavier-than-air craft, and by the early 20th-century advances in engine technology and aerodynamics made controlled, powered flight possible for the first time.
