  • Prince Jonathan's War: A Bible Story

    Mick Michaels

language (Defiant Publishing LLC, May 15, 2012)
The Philistines have taken over Israel and King Saul needs to run them out. But he's too scared to fight. His son, Prince Jonathan, is ready to trust God. He and his armor bearer have gone to fight the enemy alone. But the Philistine army is pretty big. Have they made a big mistake?* * * * * Mick Michaels thinks first grade readers need exciting books like the ones adults enjoy. So he's creating what you might call "first grade novels" — books that are more involved than easy readers but not as big as chapter books. They tell science fiction stories, fantasy stories, myths and legends, and other types of action-adventure tales that will appeal to most modern kids, especially boys. These action-adventure books average 2000-2500 words, each with 5 or 6 chapters of around 400 words or less. Each chapter includes a couple of illustrations to help ease the transition from picture-oriented books to text-oriented books. The sentences sound more adult than "See Spot run. Run, Spot, run!" but aren't overly complex. While each book includes two or three challenging new words, the vast majority of words are already part of a first-grader's vocabulary. And each book is checked by a children's librarian to make sure the reading levels are appropriate for young readers. This book is for kids reading on a level of 2-3.Young readers love action-adventure stories. If you want to encourage them to read, give them books they'll love!

Paperback (Scrivener Ontario, June 4, 2014)
The strongest person in the history of humanity happens to be a fourteen-year-old Filipina in South San Francisco, California, and her name is Imelda Corazon SantaMaria. This is the story of a girl who wants to be a woman, a woman who loves, a woman who loves a young man named Rogelio. Rogelio has a problem though: testicular cancer. To make matters worse, Rogelio’s mother has recently converted from Catholicism to become a Jehova’s Witness and forbids modern medical treatment, insisting on prayer instead. What does Rogelio want? Just a girl he can trust. What does Imelda want in return? Rogelio’s love, oh, and to no longer be a virgin on the first day of high school, six days after the opening of the story. Did I mention the abortion in chapter two, the stabbing in chapter four, the abduction (sort of) in chapter seven, the three-car pile-up in chapter nine, the psychiatric ward in chapter eleven, or whether or not Imelda gets her man in the end?

  • Big Noise at the Funky Foot Jass Club

    Eric Michael Moberg

Paperback (Scrivener Books, June 24, 2013)
New Orléans was a creation of the River—the great River, the River that divides the country as it joins it, almost too wide to see the other shore at places but only ankle deep in much of it. New Orléans is a city on the Gulf and a city that became, by simple geographic destiny, a center of commerce between the heart of America, the plantations of the Caribbean, the markets of Europe, and the slave-trade with Africa. Some scoffed, some cried, some laughed, but many rejoiced when Jefferson negotiated the Louisiana Purchase for $5 million in 1803. To many, that was a fair price for the city of New Orléans alone, the city on the River, the birth place of Jazz. This was the birth place of Honey Boy Golden, too--the one whe started it all
