  • Mission La Concepcion Purisima De Maria Santisima

    Zephyrin Engelhardt

    Paperback (McNally & Loftin, Oct. 1, 1986)
Reissue Preface For decades, this volume of Fr. Zephyrin Englehardt's series of sixteen histories of the twenty-one California missions has rarely been available in bookstores. In spite of some criticism that the famous historian writes from a standpoint biased in favor of the mission programs, his books on missions and missionaries of early California are still the most complete and authentic accounts of these historic institutions. Fr. Engelhardt (1851-1934) was Archivist at the Santa Barbara Mission where the Archive-Library contains the largest collection of documentary material on the California missions to be found anywhere. As a primary source for information on La Purisima Mission, located three miles northeast of the City of Lompoc and seven miles southeast of Vandenberg Air Force Base in Santa Barbara County, this chronicle is unsurpassed. Because the mission is in a pastoral setting fifteen miles west of U.S. 101, it is not visited by tourists as often as most of the other missions. This relatively unspoiled isolation enhances its appeal. Its acquisition by the State Department of Parks and Recreation and its accurate reconstruction in the 1930's by the Civilian Conservation Corps earn its reputation as one of the most interesting State Historical Parks in California. Fascinating interpretations are provided by the highly competent, dedicated and well-informed Park staff and Prelado de los Tesoros, the volunteer docent organization. They insure that a visitor to this mission will leave with a better understanding and appreciation of the role of the missions in California history. Richard S. Whitehead July 14, 1986
