  • Jane in Winter & Jane and the Essex Serpent: Traditional Tales of Magic and Enchantment

    Elizabeth Wix

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Nov. 11, 2016)
JANE IN WINTER More than anything, Jane Mabry wants to have an adventure and it all begins one dull Saturday morning when no one wants to play with her. First she meets a mysterious old lady near the graveyard who asks for her help. Then she meets a strange girl and her adventures do begin... JANE AND THE ESSEX SERPENT Things were much more exciting in the olden days, Jane Mabry thinks - but they were much more dangerous too. In this story Jane travels back into the past and sees history unfold and helps defeat the Essex Serpent the scourge of the neighborhood. These two tales combining history, family, magic and adventure are in the tradition of E.Nesbit, Enid Blyton and C.S.Lewis. They are set in England in the 1950's on a romantic and decaying old estate similar to the one where the author grew up. Elizabeth Wix's first novel, The Three Graces, was published by Soho Press in 1989, and she has written essays for the New York Times and Newsday. She now lives in New York.

  • Hamsters

    Elizabeth Bailey

    language (, Jan. 22, 2017)
A fun informative poem about Hamsters, based upon a great time me and my three children had owning these cute, cheeky, cuddly little creatures. The Hamsters were always escaping trying to get together and yet it always seemed strange that they liked to live alone. However, when they did get out they had no problem in finding another hamster in the house who would then also escape. We had a girl hamster upstairs and a boy hamster downstairs and one time they both got out together for a very short time. When we were on vacation a couple of weeks later, my neighbor looking after our pets phoned me up to ask me if one of the Hamsters could possibly be having babies, because a miracle had just happened. Feanie, our downstairs hamster, had given birth to four babies.I wrote this poem for my children and I hope your children enjoy it as much as they did.

eBook (Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, Nov. 3, 2020)
Fifteen-year-old Louisa Adair must team up with two friends to crack a German code -- and put herself straight into the enemy's crosshairs -- in this nail-biting historical novel set during World War II.The hair stood up at the back of my neck. Those letters meant something. And with the cipher machine, I'd worked it out myself.1940. Facing a seemingly endless war, fifteen-year-old Louisa Adair wants to fight back, make a difference, do something-anything to escape the Blitz and the ghosts of her parents, who were killed by enemy action. But when she accepts a position caring for an elderly German woman in the small village of Windyedge, Scotland, it hardly seems like a meaningful contribution. Still, the war feels closer than ever in Windyedge, where Ellen McEwen, a volunteer driver with the Royal Air Force, and Jamie Beaufort-Stuart, a flight leader for the 648 Squadron, are facing a barrage of unbreakable code and enemy attacks they can't anticipate.Their paths converge when a German pilot lands in Windyedge under mysterious circumstances and plants a key that leads Louisa to an unparalleled discovery: an Enigma machine that translates German code. Louisa, Ellen, and Jamie must work together to unravel a puzzle that could turn the tide of the war? but doing so will put them directly in the cross-hairs of the enemy.Featuring beloved characters from Code Name Verity and The Pearl Thief, as well as a remarkable new voice, this brilliant, breathlessly plotted novel by award-winning author Elizabeth Wein is a must-read.

It is the sixth century in Aksum, Africa. Young Telemakos?King Arthur?s half-Ethiopian grandson?is still recovering from his ordeal as a government spy in the far desert, trying to learn who was breaking the Emperor?s plague quarantine. Before he is fully himself again, tragedy and menace strike, and he finds himself sent, with his baby sister, Athena, to live with Abreha, the ruler of Himyar?a longtime enemy of the Aksumites, now perhaps a friend. His aunt Goewin, Arthur?s daughter, warns him that Abreha is a man to be wary of, someone to watch carefully. Telemakos promises he will be mindful?but he does not realize that Goewin?s warnings are not enough to protect him. The Sunbird (?Intense, absorbing, and luminously written,? Kirkus Reviews, starred review) was the first book about Telemakos. The Lion Hunter continues his story, to be quickly followed by The Empty Kingdom?a two-book sequence called The Mark of Solomon.
