About the Book These are titles about women who have been prominent in any field of endeavour, including education, literature, the arts, music, politics, medicine, science and technology. This also includes women who have been prominent in history, in women’s organizations, and part of the movement for women’s suffrage. Also in this Book Women's fiction focuses on women's life experiences that are generally marketed to female readers, and should not be confused with Women's writing, which relates to books written by women rather than for them specifically. There is no comparable maket for males. Women's fiction often describes a woman on the cusp of life changes, her personal development, and her transformative journey through her relationships with others, in particular her romantic relationship. Also in this Book Women's studies examines women’s lives and experiences, the social and cultural constructs of gender; systems of privilege and oppression; and relationships between power and gender. Subjects include feminist theory, standpoint theory, intersectionality, multiculturalism, transnational feminism, social justice, affect studies, agency, biopolitics, materialisms, and embodiment. • Three Vassar Girls in Russia and Turkey

    Elizabeth W. Champney

Paperback (Forgotten Books, April 5, 2018)
Excerpt from Three Vassar Girls in Russia and TurkeyT was at Gibraltar, in the autumn of 1875, that Sallie and Gus first met Lord Saunters and his family. The steamer stopped here to coal after its long trip across the Atlantic; and the passengers had an opportunity to land and to inspect the fortifications constructed by the English, the famous galleries in the Rock, with their great guns Commanding the strait and the Spanish shore. The varied nationalities to be found in the streets and markets were extremely interesting. Here a M'oor from Africa, in a white burnous, stalked majestically by, hardly brushing with his robe the cringing Jew who flattened himself against the wall to let him pass. In this corner sat a jetty Nubian displaying for sale a basket of pome granates; and there two Spanish ladies, with lace mantillas thrown over their shapely heads, waved their fans gently at a jaunty English officer in a gay scarlet and gold uniform; and marching down another steep street to the sound of a wheezy bagpipe was a company of Scotch Highlanders while the flags of a dozen nations waved from the Ship ping in the harbor, all dominated by the power of England.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • Romance of the Renaissance Chateaux

    Elizabeth W. Champney

Paperback (University Press of the Pacific, Aug. 26, 2004)
The Renaissance is associated in our minds with Italy, and rightly so. It is as though the sun had risen first from the Adriatic, but while it was noon in Florence dawn was touching the French hills, and for France the sixteenth century was to be the century of the Renaissance. The peasant must live; the land was still the seigneur's, and rent took the place of military service. The baron, though less powerful, suddenly found himself a richer man, and his superfluous wealth was utilized in the building of more luxurious homes. The French architects who had built the great Gothic cathedrals were capable of solving the problem now presented them of devising a style of domestic architecture suited to the new conditions, and a great variety of beautiful chateaus sprang up all over France.
