  • Home Alone in America: Letters of a Young German Alone in the U. S. and His Family in Cold War Berlin from 1946 to 1955

    Elizabeth Dost

    language (, Feb. 14, 2016)
This book, through original letters, tells the story of a young German sent alone to the U.S. at the age of 16 as he struggles to bring the rest of his family to this country. Through the letters of his mother and brother It also tells the story of his family in divided Berlin during the immediate post-war and early Cold War years. Because he had born in the United States, unlike the rest of his family, his American citizenship enabled him to enter this country as a "repatriated American," but his struggles were those of a teenaged immigrant without a sponsor or any contacts in his birth country. In some respects this is truly a "coming of age" story as well as constituting a unique primary source documenting the effects of the early Cold War on an individual family.
