They return to Erl and have a son, but in the manner of fairy brides of folklore, she fits uneasily with his people. She returns to the waiting arms of her father in Elfland, and her lovesick husband goes searching for her, abandoning the kingdom of Erl and wandering in a now-hopeless quest. Erl is transformed into a part of Elfland, and Lirazel and her loved ones are reunited forever in an eternal, enchanted world.
  • The King of Elfland's Daughter

    Lord Dunsany, Edward Plunkett

Hardcover (Positronic Publishing, Jan. 1, 2020)
It's hard to overstate just how influential The King of Elfland's Daughter has been to modern fantasy; particularly high fantasy, sword and sorcery, and high fantasy. Lyrical and dream like it takes us on a search for a fairy princess and the magic that man has always secretly craved. Masterfully written, poignant, and yet still full of exciting action and adventure. It's not simply the beauty of the language, the astute eye for character, the hint of humor, or even the spell of legendry and wonder, but Dunsany's unique combination of all of the above.-- Charles de LintA fantasy novel in a class with the Tolkien books.--L. Sprague de CampIt could be the very best fairy story ever written.--Gahan WilsonNo amount of mere description can convey more than a fraction of Lord Dunsany's pervasive charm.--H. P. LovecraftOne of the greatest writers of this century.--Arthur C. Clarke

  • The Sword of Welleran and Other Stories: classic literature

    Lord Dunsany, Edward Plunkett

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Oct. 26, 1908)
The Sword of Welleran and Other Stories is the third book by Irish fantasy writer Lord Dunsany, considered a major influence on the work of J. R. R. Tolkien, H. P. Lovecraft, Ursula LeGuin and others. It was first published in hardcover by George Allen & Sons in October, 1908, and has been reprinted a number of times since. Issued by the Modern Library in a combined edition with A Dreamer's Tales as A Dreamer's Tales and Other Stories in 1917. The book is a series of short stories, some of them linked by Dunsany's invented pantheon of deities who dwell in Pegana, which were the focus of his earlier collections The Gods of Pegana and Time and the Gods. One of the stories, "The Fortress Unvanquishable, Save for Sacnoth," was afterwards (1910) published by itself as a separate book, a now very-rare "Art-and-Craft" style limited edition

  • The King of Elfland's Daughter: A Novel

    Plunkett Edward

    (, April 23, 2020)
“No amount of mere description can convey more than a fraction of Lord Dunsany's pervasive charm.”—H.P. LovecraftWith an introduction by Neil GaimanThe poetic style and sweeping grandeur of The King of Elfland's Daughter has made it one of the most beloved fantasy novels of our time, a masterpiece that influenced some of the greatest contemporary fantasists. The heartbreaking story of a marriage between a mortal man and an elf princess is a masterful tapestry of the fairy tale following the “happily ever after.”Praise for The King of Elfland's Daughter“We find that he has but tranfigured with beauty the common sights of the world.” —William Butler Yeats“I shall indeed be happy if this volume contributes to the rediscovery of one of the greatest writers of this century.” —Arthur C. Clarke“Del Ray is to be thanked for bringing these works back into print. No one can understand modern fantasy without understanding its roots, and Lord Dunsany's work is immediately significant as well as enjoyable even today.”A classic and must-read for fiction lovers.I'm a big fan of Lord Dunsany having read several of his books: I love his beautiful prose, his wonderful story-telling abilities and the way he builds up images of his fantastic worlds af if there is nothing strange about these being possible, plausible even. I had lost this title in the attic, having bought and read it some 40 years ago, so I re-bought and re-read it, and I think I love it even more now than I did back then. I'm even thinking of translating it into Dutch to read to my class.
