The account of the first plan of the moon is a sketch, as accurate as was needed, of the old chat and dreams, plans and jokes, of our college days, before he left Cambridge in 1838. As I learned almost everything I know through his care and love and help, directly or indirectly, it is a pleas ure to say this here. The story was published in the Atlantic Monthly, in 1870 and 1871. In France during the 13th century a young girl was asked by her mother to drink a "health concoction". She became violently ill. Her rich merchant father was willing to spend any amount for her recovery but they needed to find an old doctor who was driven out of town years before --a despised "Poor Man of Lyons." Time was running out. The way was perilous. The young town doctor knew a charcoal maker up in the hills who knew where the old doctor's secret dwelling was. If they found the charcoal maker, would he lead the messenger to the old doctor? Would the old doctor come out of hiding and risk his life by traveling to the enemy's camp to save the sick child? Dangerous, gripping, intensely fascinating.

This book was written during the Civil War, as brother fought brother, to show to boys and to girls, to men and to women, what it is to have a country...and what a terrible thing it would be to NOT have a country.
