Three young men, who had served as soldiers together in the Army Air Corps during World War II, meet up again at a helicopter pilot training class in Bridgeport, Connecticut.Tom, Dan and Rod are excited to be learning how to fly this relatively new type of aircraft. As they go through the training, they make beginner mistakes, and then learn how to correct them. The details of this will be fascinating for any young reader interested in flying: âWhat I told you the other day about having enough altitude was correct, Rod,â explained Chet. âWhat happened to you today was that you let yourself slip off the air cushion.â âThe air cushion!â exclaimed the boys in unison, âwhat is that?âThe story follows the young men as they travel across the United States, on to Australia, Brazil, and Alaska. As they go about life as helicopter pilots, adventures enliven the pages: Dan spots a little boy stranded on a sand bar and brings his âcopter down to transport him to safety. Tom rescues a man on an overturned boat, and Rod rounds up a flock of straying sheep. Eventually the friends meet up again and make plans to form a business as a helicopter service doing jobs that regular planes canât handle.Color and b/w illustrations show the parts of a helicopter and details of an instrument panel. The Foreword is by Igor Sikorsky. In 1939 Sikorsky designed and flew the first viable American helicopter, which pioneered the rotor configuration used by most helicopters today.
