  • The Littlest Rebel

    Edward Peple

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Jan. 30, 2018)
Excerpt from The Littlest RebelThe play, from which this book is written, was in no sense of the word intended as a war drama; for war is merely its background, and always in the center stands a lonely little child.War is its theme but not its purpose. War breeds hatred, horror, pestilence and famine, yet from its tears and ashes eventually must rise the clean white spirit of humanity. The enmity between North and South is dead; it sleeps with the fathers and the sons, the brothers and the lovers, Who died in a cause which each believed was just. Therefore this story deals, not with the right or wrong of a lost confederacy, but with the mercy and generosity, the chivalry and human ity which lived in the hearts of the Blue and Gray, a noble contrast to the grim brutality of war.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • The littlest rebel; a play in four acts

    Edward Peple

Paperback (Ulan Press, Aug. 31, 2012)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

  • The Littlest Rebel

    Edward Peple

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, June 14, 2013)
The troubles of the War Between the States come home to a little plantation girl nicknamed Virgie when her father is arrested and charged with espionage against the Yankees. In The Littlest Rebel, the basis of the classic Shirley Temple movie, there's a message of familial love and perseverance as well as a celebration of the Old South's genteel ways “The appeal of children on the stage is not easy to resist; and it is to the very charming acting of a little girl named Juliet Shelby that the success of Mr. Edward Peple’s old fashioned and pleasing melodrama, called ‘The Littlest Rebel,’ must mainly be ascribed. Set in Virginia in the last year of the Civil War….Mr. Peple is to be congratulated on writing a Civil War play in which there is neither a Northern officer in love with a Southern girl nor a Southern officer in love with a Northern girl. ‘The Littlest Rebel’ is, of course, a sentimental composition; but Mr. Peple shows a very pretty tact in setting forth that sweet, alluring sentiment which makes us follow easily the leading of a little child.” -Everybody's Magazine, Volume 26, 1912 “The scene of this exquisite little masterpiece is laid in the South during the Civil War. Here the North and South meet, and “Virgie” stands between them; a rare little heroine. There is a pathos and humor in this story that will be appreciated by every reader. It is truly a book for young and old. Mr. Peple has written a story that is a joy to all, and “Virgie” will be the most talked about young lady of the season.” -Publishers Weekly
