âYou refused to submit, to let it go. Nearly everyone else in this school wouldâve just shut their mouths and kept quiet, but you didnât. All you had to do, Sears, was go with the current, and none of this would be happening. Instead, you resisted the current and made it flow your own way.â âI didnât know what I was getting into,â I said. âI might act differently if I could go back." His face went greyer. âTrust me, thatâs what youâll wish before this is over. But itâs too late now, isnât it? Now the whole schoolâs gone stupid because of you. But soon theyâll see that things were better off when they just did as we said. Yes, weâll make things so miserable that everyone will beg for the way things were.â Moving far away from everyone you know is hard, especially if you're moving to a small, inconspicuous town in Arizona. But when Cover Sears (CO-ver, that is) starts attending his new school, he has far more difficult things coming. He immediately notices some strange occurrences, each seeming to revolve around a group of boys called "the Frontiers" who make their own rules and dominate the other students. Practically all of them accept that; it's just normal. Very soon, Cover finds himself on the Frontiers' bad side, and he's all the time curious to know why Westfield Middle is the way it is. What is the Prison? Why is the principal gone all the time? Why don't the teachers restrain the Frontiers? Why are so many unnormal things allowed to happen? In the past, Cover might have gone directly to his parents with these school issues, but things are different now that his father is a busy pastor with little time on his hands. So, as Cover and his friends take on Westfield Middle School one day at a time, what will happen? What will they discover? What's at the root of this dysfunctional school?
