  • The Show

    . Carter

    (AuthorHouse, March 23, 2018)
The day Rocky became Brian’s chocolate Labrador was the first best day of his life. The second best day was when he met Molly, the cocker spaniel next door. The dog life has been a good one—chasing grasshoppers, playing tug-of-war, swimming in the lake—but Rocky also wanted to be a service dog. He wanted to be a police dog and go through the police academy. Molly, too, had her own dreams of being a show dog and competing in the dog show after her stint in beauty school. However, following their dreams meant they would have to leave each other and their childhood homes, and saying goodbye is bittersweet. Rocky’s life as a police dog is a dangerous one, but Molly’s journey to become a show dog did have its bad guys. New friends and new adventures await the two dogs, but will Rocky’s and Molly’s different dreams mean they will have to say goodbye forever? Or will fate somehow bring them back together for good? With perseverance, friendship, and fun, Rocky and Molly show what it means to dream big no matter what happens.

    Paperback (iUniverse, Nov. 17, 2011)
Eddie Caskitt is filled with relief. The worries of moving into a new neighborhood, making friends, and starting a new school have been weighing him down. But after spending just a few minutes with the kids of Drayton Woods, Eddie realizes that the adventurous summer he was hoping for might just happen after all. Eddie hopes all the fun he anticipates will ease the pain of knowing his grandfather is dying. With his last bit of strength before he passes away, Eddie's grandfather whispers that he has left something for Eddie in his barn-and that the tall tales he has been telling Eddie for years are true. With the help of a magic bracelet he finds inside a secret hole in the barn, Eddie and his two new friends, Dan and Scotty, enter a portal where they are suddenly thrust into roles guarding the world of Carlousia. Now the boys must conquer fear, outwit predators, unfold betrayal, and overthrow evil-all while pretending everything is normal at home. In this extraordinary adventure, three boys take a wild, coming-of-age journey that intertwines risk, honor, loyalty, and the kind of danger that unfortunately may lead to unimaginable loss.

Not illustrated. 1896 Excerpt: ...may laugh yust as much as you tam please, but I lets no tam sow bite me." Then the boys roared with laughter, and there was no more sleep in camp for us that night. We got up early and had our breakfast by sunrise. I told the boys I thought I could go the rest of the way alone without any danger, so I started on my road and the boys returned to their camp. The canon was a narrow place where a little stream ran through the Umpqua mountains down into the valley. A man in passing through the canon had to follow the bed of the creek all the way, for it was solid rock on each side, and was from fifty to live hundred feet high, and about eight miles in length. The night before I got there it had rained heavily in the mountains so the creek was booming through the canon like a mill race. In places the water would come half way up on my horse's sides and it would be all he could do to keep on his feet. At the mouth of the canon where it enters into the Umpqua valley, it turns to the right and pitches down over the rocks like a whirlpool. Just above where it turns down the hill is the old crossing, and about ten feet above they had started to build a bridge and had three bents put up about ten feet apart, with an approach on each side about six feet long. They bad two planks two by eight inches lying side by side across the frame work. When I got there I saw that it would be almost impossible to ford the stream so I did not know just what to do as I was afraid to stay there long. I got off and tried to lead my horse across the bridge on the planks but he would not budge a foot. I tried quite awhile to get him onto the plank, but it was no go. Then I thought I would try riding him over and as soon as I got on him and started him he walked straight across the bri...
