  • Kindness

    Dennis Foon

    (Dramatic Publishing, Jan. 1, 2008)
Comedy ~ Drama / Kindness offers an unforgettable lesson in compassion and listening to one another. It sensitively captures the reality of children's feelings as it tells the story of three kids, Tessa, Damon and Keegan, as they navigate the small and large catastrophes in their lives. Mr. Foon spent a week interviewing kids in five Winnipeg schools about what mattered to them. He discovered the importance to children of giving and receiving, compassion, generosity and unconditional love, and these responses provided the foundation for Kindness. "We discussed their families and friends, their loves, their hates, their fears, the empty spaces in their hearts," said Mr. Foon. "What struck me was that no matter what their difficulties—and some were huge—many of these kids had enormous compassion for each other and the world around them. Some showed it by supporting a friend in need, others had begun fundraising efforts for worthy causes. These kids, barely alive a dozen years, got me thinking about those empty spaces—and how all of us need to find ways to fill them." (Cast: 4 to17 actors (gender flexible)

    Dennis Foon

Paperback (Annick Press, Sept. 6, 2003)
It's a struggle to survive on post-apocalyptic earth. In this first book in the trilogy of The Longlight Legacy, the wars have transformed the world, and 16-year-old Roan is about to discover a terrible truth. When Roan's parents and the people of Longlight perish in a raid, Roan is filled with rage. Torn between his desire for revenge and the legacy of peace he has inherited, he is taken in by a sect of warriors. With them he learns he has exceptional talent as a fighter. But Roan is haunted by visions he can't understand. When he commits his first act of violence, he flees in disgust into the most wasted lands of all, the Devastation. He meets friends and allies in unexpected places, as his enemies hunt him down. But it is only when Roan meets Alandra that he begins to understand his life's purpose and why his village, Longlight, was destroyed. Dennis Foon has created an immensely powerful and disturbing look at a wasted world. Through the character of Roan, hope and the promise of renewed life seem possible. This is a stunning, evocative, page-turning novel in a popular teen genre: sci-fi/fantasy. (200402)

  • The Short Tree and the Bird That Could Not Sing

    Dennis Foon

Paperback (Dramatic Publishing, Jan. 1, 2009)
Comedy - Drama / A tree that resents its roots and a bird with the worst singing voice in the history of the avian species are the delightful characters in this quirky fable about two unlikely forces of nature: a spunky, unflappable bird and a stunted, insecure tree. Alone in the razed forest, the lonely tree is visited by the bird, who agrees to quit singing in return for being allowed to rest on the tree's branches—which are just the right size for her to hold onto. Each day the tree is delighted by the tales the bird tells him of the wonders she has seen when she flies away into the sky—a snow people's wedding, a circus, and a family of escaped balloons hiding in a cloud. Fall comes, and the bird flies south, unmoved by the tree's pleas for her to stay. Throughout the long cold winter, the tree finds company in the stars, the North Wind and even his own shadow. Spring returns, and so does the bird, bringing with her a souvenir from her winter in Florida—a piece of pink beach ball to adorn the tree's tiniest branch. And so the two unlikely friends are happily reunited. A moving fable about the environment, loneliness and love. (Cast: 4 to 6 actors with doubling. May be expanded to 26 actors.)

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
