However throughout his life he preferred to be called Jack. The reasons for this peculiar change of name and other interesting facts and stories about C. S. Lewis are retold in this book. It was written in the centenary year of his birth - this is a reprint. This book takes you into the life of C. S. Lewis, the child, the scholar, the husband, the writer and the believer in God. Derick Bingham has researched this book thoroughly and has lovingly retold the story of this great storyteller.‘I was challenged to write this book by my friend the distinguished sculptor Ross Wilson. At that time he was preparing his CS Lewis Centenary Sculpture to be erected in the great man's native city, Belfast in Northern Ireland. As I live in Belfast it was a privilege to be writing about our city's most famous writer, his upbringing, his adventures and how he came to know the Lord Jesus. As I researched his life I was amazed to discover how much sorrow CS Lewis experienced and I was deeply inspired by how he overcame his difficulties. My greatest joy following the writing of this book has been to see it published in Chinese.'Derick Bingham ~ Was the teaching pastor at Christchurch, BelfastIf you like this, you'll love this: Ten boys who used their talents by Irene Howat. This title includes a chapter on C. S. Lewis. Also why not look at the title: Talking about Dragons by William Chad Newsom. This is a review of the work of Tolkien and Lewis and how to use these to develop and encourage family devotional times.Catherine MacKenzie ~ Author and CF4K Editor

  • Michael Faraday: Spiritual Dynamo

    Derick Bingham

    Paperback (CF4Kids, Nov. 20, 2010)
Every time you switch on a light, start up a computer or turn on a television, you do it because of discoveries related to the work of Michael Faraday. In a swimming pool you will be guarded from disease because of liquid chlorine in the water: this is because Michael Faraday first liquefied chlorine. Faraday built the very first electric motor and later the first generator and transformer of electricity. This was to change long distance communication across the earth leading to the ability to talk to astronauts far out in space. His work on electromagnetism is included in Melvyn Braggs' book on 12 books that changed the World. But Michael Faraday also suffered from a disorder known as dyslexia. This meant that he had difficulty in learning to read or interpret words, letters, and other symbols. Faraday however, overcame this problem to become one of the greatest public lecturers in history. The interesting thing is that alongside all the amazing discoveries and brilliant experiments there was something more important in Michael's life. He deeply loved and followed the Lord Jesus. On one occasion after a brilliant public lecture he had given at the Royal Institution, the house "rocked" with enthusiastic applause. The Prince of Wales rose to congratulate the great Professor. The thunders of applause however, were followed by a strange silence. Everybody waited for Michael Faraday's reply, but the lecturer had vanished! Where was he? Faraday had slipped away to a prayer meeting. Faraday believed that his great purpose in life was to read, as he put it, "the book of nature ... written by the finger of God". Few people in history have read that book more accurately and applied it more helpfully.

Hon. Tony Blair, Former Prime Minister"If ever I relived a life in my imagination it was while writing this life of the greatest Christian politician of all time. I travelled with him in my mind to his life as a boy in Hull and on to Cambridge University. I marvelled at the way the Lord reached him and saved his soul. I held my breath as he took on the horrendous slave trade in a three-hour speech before the House of Commons that became one of the greatest speeches in the history of mankind. His eventual triumph over slavery, three days before he died was astounding! The greatest joy I have experienced following the writing of this book has been to see it published in Arabic"Derick Bingham ~ Was the teaching pastor at Christchurch, Belfast"The abolition of slavery in the U.K. has an anniversary in the year 2007. This is why teachers, sunday school teachers and children's workers should make sure they stock up on Wilberforce material in the run up to this. A film on Wilberforce's life is also being launched in 2006. Make the most of these events and get Christian books into children's homes on the back of them!"Catherine MacKenzie ~ Author and CF4K Editornation.
