  • The Left Behinds: Abe Lincoln and the Selfie that Saved the Union

    David Potter

eBook (Crown Books for Young Readers, Jan. 12, 2016)
Percy Jackson fans will embrace this humorous time-travel adventure that sends Mel and his friends right into the Civil War’s Battle of Gettysburg. Mel, Bev, and Brandon—the Left Behinds—are at it again. When the iTime app on their phones sends them to Washington, D.C., in 1863, they find themselves smack dab in the middle of the Civil War. They sit in on a séance with First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln and are shown every inch of the White House by Tad, the youngest Lincoln. But when they meet President Abe Lincoln himself, he is preoccupied with the fateful battle at Gettysburg, which is just under way. The kids receive their marching orders—they must somehow travel to Gettysburg, make sure what’s supposed to happen does happen, save the Union, and be home in time for dinner. No biggie. After all, it’s only the entire future of the country at stake. Includes an author’s note and information on Civil War reenactments and living history sites around the nation. Praise for the Left Behinds series: “The narrative is pure fun. . . . History made silly for readers who can’t get into it straight.” —Kirkus Reviews “This is Magic Tree House all grown up, and kids who once loved that time travel conceit will be delighted all over again.” —The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books “Readers will charge through these super-short chapters like a Revolutionary soldier on the run.” —BookPage

    David Potter

Hardcover (Crown Books for Young Readers, Jan. 6, 2015)

On Christmas Day, Mel finds General George Washington lying dead as a doornail in a stable. But Mel knows that George Washington must cross the Delaware River, or the course of American history will be changed forever. Could Mel’s iPhone have sent him back in time to 1776? And can Mel and his schoolmates, know-it-all Bev and laid-back Brandon, come to the rescue? Perhaps, with a little help from two colonial kids and Benjamin Franklin himself. Debut novelist David Potter cleverly combines time travel, humor, and American history in this fast-paced adventure. About the Book Poetry is a literary form that uses aesthetic and rhythmic qualities of language (e.g. phonaesthetics, sound symbolism, and metre) to enhance the prosaic ostensible meaning, or generate an alternative meaning. Poetry uses numerous devices such as assonance, alliteration, onomatopoeia and rhythm are sometimes used to achieve musical or incantatory effects. Poetry's long history dates back to prehistorical times ehen hunting poetry was created in Africa. Also in this Book Poetry as an art form predates written text, with the earliest poetry having been recited or sung, and employed as a way of remembering oral history. The oldest examples of epic poetry include the Epic of Gilgamesh from Bablylon and the Greek epics The Iliad and The Odyssey, and the Indian Sanskrit epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata. The longest epic poems in history were the Mahabharata and the Tibetan Epic of King Gesar. Aristotle's Poetics considered that there were three genres of poetry—the epic, the comic, and the tragic. Later aestheticians identified: epic poetry, lyric poetry, and dramatic poetry. One of the most popular form since the Late Middle Ages, is the sonnet, which by the 13th century had become standardized as fourteen lines following a set rhyme scheme. The form had crystallized further by the 14th century and the Italian Renaissance, under the guidance of Petrarch. Fessenden put the girl gently down on the flat rock at the edge of the stream.“There you are, little woman,” he said. “You really ought to be careful how you go splashing about. If you hadn’t screamed in time——”“Did I scream?”“Rather! Lucky you did.”“I didn’t scream because I was afraid. I stumbled and—and I thought I saw an eel in that pool, ready to bite me. Eels do bite.”“Undoubtedly—horribly!”He stepped back with a little flourish of the hat in his hand. “I beg your pardon,” he said. “I took you for a child. That dress, you know, and——”“And my being in paddling.”“I’m afraid I’ve been rather presumptuous.”The color in her cheeks deepened a little. “Not at all. It’s my own fault. This afternoon—just for an hour or two—I’ve been dreaming—pretending I wasn’t grown up. It’s so sad to be grown up.”His eyes sparkled with instant sympathy. “After all, are you so very old?”She was seventeen or thereabouts, he guessed—a girl lately arrived at womanhood. Her hair was arranged in a bewildering fashion, requiring a ribbon here and there to keep its blonde glory within bounds. Beneath the dark brows and darker lashes blue eyes showed in sudden flashes—like the glint of bayonets from an ambush. The delicately rounded cheeks, just now a little blushing, and the red-lipped mouth, made her look absurdly young. She had sunk to a seat upon the rock. One foot was doubled under her, and the other, a white vision veiled by the water, dangled uncertainly, as if inclined to seek the retirement possessed by its fellow. His gaze lingered on the curve of throat and shoulder.“If Phidias were only alive——” he said.“Phidias?”“A Greek friend of mine, dead some years. He would have loved to turn you into marble.”She gave a little crowing laugh, delightful to hear. “I’d much rather stay alive.”“You are right. Better be a Greek goddess alive, than one dead.”She laughed again, “You’re—unusual.”He bowed with another flourish. “Then, so are you.”Their eyes met frankly. “Thank you for coming to my rescue,” she said. “But you’ve been standing in the water all this time! What am I thinking of! Come up here.”She sprang to her feet, as if to make room for him upon the rock, but sank back quickly. He gave her a scrutinizing glance.“What was that I heard?”“I asked you to get out of that horrid water. It must be frightfully cold.”He shook an admonitory finger. “Bravely done, but you can’t fool me so easily. I heard a moan, and—and I won’t remark that you’re crying.”“You’d—better not.”“You hurt yourself when you stumbled.” His firm hand was on her shoulder.“No—n-o. Well, even if I did turn my ankle, I’m not crying. It’s very tactless of you to notice.”He tried to catch a glimpse of the slim leg through the dancing water. It swung back in vigorous embarrassment.“The other ankle, then?”“Ye-es.”

Excerpt from Allan Dare and Robert Le Diable: A RomanceManchester to-day wears quite a different aspect from what it did a hundred years ago. It has increased in population, although still behind its English namesake, and is attracting notice as one of the most beautiful districts on our Atlantic coast; even Newport can not surpass it in the charms of scenery, or in the architectural beauty of the picturesque cottages that line the coast north and south of the ancient settlement.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
