Most of the time he’s a freckle-faced boy, small for his age, who attends a school known for its unwritten uniform of North Face jackets and Hollister jeans. The rest of the time he is Kieran Nightstalker, the level-fifty dark-elf hero of his favorite video game, Sovereign of Darkness. Until one day Bryan wakes up to find out his life has become a video game. Sort of. Except instead of fighting dragons or blasting bad guys, he’s still doing geometry and getting picked last for dodgeball. It’s still middle school. Only now there’s much more at stake. Stealing the Twinkie from underneath the noses of those dieting teachers isn’t enough to earn him another life. And battling the creature that escaped from the science lab doesn’t seem to cut it either. And who knew Romeo and Juliet would turn into a zombie bloodbath?! All the while he’s losing hit points and gaining levels, and facing the truth that GAME OVER might flash before his eyes at any minute. It all seems to be building to something…something that has been haunting Bryan since way before his life turned into an X-Box nightmare, a challenge that only he can face. Will Bryan find a way to beat the game before it’s too late?

  • We Ask Only for Even-Handed Justice: Black Voices from Reconstruction, 1865-1877

    John David Smith

Paperback (University of Massachusetts Press, July 24, 2014)
The sesquicentennial of the Civil War and Reconstruction invites reflection on the broad meaning of American democracy, including the ideals of freedom, equality, racial justice, and self-determination. In We Ask Only for Even-Handed Justice, John David Smith brings together a wealth of primary texts―editorials, letters, newspaper articles, and personal testimonies―to illuminate the experience of emancipation for the millions of African Americans enmeshed in the transition from chattel slavery to freedom from 1865 to 1877.The years following Appomattox offered the freed people numerous opportunities and challenges. Ex-slaves reconnected with relatives dispersed by the domestic slave trade and the vicissitudes of civil war. They sought their own farms and homesteads, education for their children, and legal protection from whites hostile to their new status. They negotiated labor contracts, established local communities, and, following the 1867 Reconstruction Acts, entered local, state, and national politics. Though aided by Freedmen's Bureau agents and sympathetic whites, former slaves nevertheless faced daunting odds. Ku Klux Klansmen and others terrorized blacks who asserted themselves, many northerners lost interest in their plight, and federal officials gradually left them to their own resources. As a result, former Confederates regained control of the southern state governments following the 1876 presidential election. We Ask Only for Even-Handed Justice is a substantially revised and expanded edition of a book originally published under the title Black Voices from Reconstruction, 1865–1877.

  • A Tale by Fire: a meditative picture book

    John David Buell

Hardcover (Elder Star Press, March 25, 2019)
A Path to Peace and Inner Power Welcome to A Tale by Fire, a meditative, empowering picture book for children and adults alike. It is a journey of fire and light across the ages of history - as told from the perspective of fire itself. From page to page, era to era, "fire" is defined loosely: a cityscape's glow, a rocket's exhaust, a star's light. Across the ages, it has been our tool, our weapon, and our beacon... and from a grand perspective, it tells the story of how humanity has chosen to use its power, both consciously and unconsciously, for good and for ill. Woven with hardship, healing, and hope, this strange and visionary tale gently reminds us that we are without measure... and that when we choose to share our light, we can illuminate the world. Perfect for a bedside, a coffee table, or a quiet corner. AUTHOR'S NOTE: This is a story for both children and adults (ages 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and up). However, please note that there are several childlike drawings of war throughout the book. The intention is for readers, young and old, to reflect on the responsibility that comes along with our inner power... because the next chapter of Planet Earth, for better or for worse, is ours to forge.

  • Jump Starting the Universe eBook Bundle

    John David Buchanan

eBook (John David Buchanan, Jan. 23, 2018)
If you like science fiction, you will love the Jump Starting the Universe Book Bundle. It includes all three books in the series - Jump Starting the Universe, The Edge of Nothing and Everything, and World EatersWhen two universes collide, Mark, Blackie, Amelia and Wayne begin an incredible adventure. Caught in the mixing zone of two universes wasn't the problem. But sometimes things in a mixing zone don't stay put when universes separate. They stared at the sky and its unfamiliar star patterns, wondering what happened. Lucky for them they were given a Jump Starter; too bad it wasn't programmed. None of them could have predicted what would happen when Amelia pushed its red button. Nita, who had just met Mark, was sitting in the back seat. She disappeared with the rest of them. Blackie met Joules on Gafcon-49. After a disturbing incident where Joules worked, involving Shumbrans and complete destruction of the Museum's rotunda, the group took a day trip to Mountain Lake to recover. They never returned. When the Nomad dropped out of the jump, it plowed to a stop in deep sand. Its not often six people dodge death twice in the same day. They were lucky to be alive. Now they had to figure out how to get back to Gafcon-49. When Nita discovered new information about her family, the return trip go Gafcon-49 was cancelled. They decided on a new destination. They were going to go looking for a fight, and they found one. With Missiles exploding all around the Centorian Stealth Fighter they were on, and no way to escape their attackers, the group had to make a hard decision. If being lost wasn't bad enough, they still hadn't figured out how to program the Jump Starter. When they needed to Jump, they had no idea on what planet they would land. To complicate matters, two alien races were about to go to war, and if that wasn't bad enough, the World Eaters had returned. Entire planets and their populations were disappearing into the rift. If circumstances required them to jump, and they ended up on the wrong planet, they were doomed. Without some help, and a lot of luck, none of them would survive. Wayne always said no one on Earth would believe their story. They might not ever get the chance to tell it.
