  • Lincoln's Last Trial: The Murder Case that Propelled Him to the Presidency

    Dan Abrams, David Fisher

Audio CD (Harlequin Audio and Blackstone Audio, June 5, 2018)
The true story of Abraham Lincoln's last murder trial, a strange case in which he had a deep personal involvement -- and which was played out in the nation's newspapers as he began his presidential campaign. At the end of the summer of 1859, twenty-two-year-old Peachy Quinn Harrison went on trial for murder in Springfield, Illinois. Abraham Lincoln, who had been involved in more than three thousand cases -- including more than twenty-five murder trials -- during his two-decades-long career, was hired to defend him. This was to be his last great case as a lawyer. What normally would have been a local case took on momentous meaning. Lincoln's debates with Senator Stephen Douglas the previous fall had gained him a national following, transforming the little-known, self-taught lawyer into a respected politician. He was being urged to make a dark-horse run for the presidency in 1860. Taking this case involved great risk. His reputation was untarnished, but should he lose this trial, should Harrison be convicted of murder, the spotlight now focused so brightly on him might be dimmed. He had won his most recent murder trial with a daring and dramatic maneuver that had become a local legend, but another had ended with his client dangling from the end of a rope. The case posed painful personal challenges for Lincoln. The murder victim had trained for the law in his office, and Lincoln had been his friend and his mentor. His accused killer, the young man Lincoln would defend, was the son of a close friend and loyal supporter. And to win this trial he would have to form an unholy allegiance with a longtime enemy, a revivalist preacher he had twice run against for political office -- and who had bitterly slandered Lincoln as an ''infideltoo lacking in faith'' to be elected. Lincoln's Last Trial captures the presidential hopeful's dramatic courtroom confrontations in vivid detail as he fights for his client -- but also for his own blossoming political future. It is a moment in history that shines a light on our legal system, as in this case Lincoln fought a legal battle that remains incredibly relevant today.
  • Beaver Valley: Stories of the Men and Women Who Built the West

    Dave P. Fisher

language (Double Diamond Books, Feb. 16, 2016)
Courage, integrity, and honor were highly respected traits among the men and women who built lives in the early days of the American West, but were they ever subject to indecision, doubts, worries, loss, guilt, and even fear? Yes, after all these were real people with all the same emotions we deal with today. Yet they prevailed, making the right decisions, quelling the doubts, and overcoming their fears. Among the 17 stories in this collection you will meet people like Cooper Thompson who can no longer run from his family in "He’s My Brother," and Cassie Dahlman who sets out to defend her rights in "The Shooting of Rebel Tanner." U.S. Marshal Preston Yates investigates four murders connected to a letter in "The Double Deal." There is an accounting for loose tongues in "Watch Your Words," overcoming loss, doubt, fear and worry in "Mrs. Reynolds," and "Old Nate’s Farewell," and witness the consequences of deception in "I Did You Wrong." Along the way you will also meet Eli and Rob in "Beaver Valley," Case Bristol in "Monty’s Last Hand," and Ward Pohl in "The Blood Oath," all of whom set out to right wrongs that have been done. These are men and women of the true westward movement, not the “Western Myth” as some claim. It was real and so were the people.

    Mike Earp, David Fisher

Hardcover (William Morrow, May 13, 2014)
Blending history and memoir, retired U.S. Marshal Mike Earp—a descendant of the legendary lawman Wyatt Earp—offers an exclusive and fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the most storied law enforcement agency in America, illuminating its vital role in the nation’s development for more than two hundred years.Mike Earp spent his career with the U.S. Marshals Service, reaching the number three position in the organization’s hierarchy before he retired. In this fascinating, eye-opening book, written with the service’s full cooperation, he shares his experiences and takes us on a fascinating tour of this extraordinary organization—the oldest, the most effective, and the most dangerous branch of American law enforcement, and the least known.Unlike their counterparts in the police and the FBI, U.S. Marshals aren’t responsible for investigating or prosecuting crimes. They pursue and arrest the most dangerous criminal offenders on U.S. soil, an extraordinarily hazardous job often involving gun battles and physical altercations. Earp takes us back to the service’s early days, explaining its creation and its role in the border wars that helped make continental expansion possible. He brings to life the gunslingers and gunfights that have made the Marshals legend, and explores the service’s role today integrating federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies in the hunt for the most notorious criminals—terrorists, drug lords, gun runners.Setting his own experiences within the long history of the U.S. Marshals service, Earp offers a moving and illuminating tribute to the brave marshals who have dedicated their lives to keeping the nation safe.
