  • Westward Expansion

    David C. King

    Paperback (Wiley, April 24, 2012)
Explore the American West with the people who settled it! In 1805, when William Clark first spotted the Pacific Ocean-highlighting the famous Lewis and Clark expedition across the continent-it marked the beginning of a massive westward movement that lasted through the century. Westward Expansion provides a rare glimpse into the day-to-day experiences of pioneering Americans as they followed Lewis and Clark's lead, risking their lives to explore, farm, seek their fortunes, and establish communities in what had been considered a vast wilderness. Through rich primary sources, you'll find yourself living and working alongside the brave men and women who came to typify the American West, including pioneers from the eastern states, from Europe, and from Asia; Native Americans defending their homeland; freed slaves searching to carve their own destinies out of America's wilderness; prospectors searching for gold and silver; and many other colorful characters. From Daniel Boone's account of first exploring Old Kentucky to Chief Joseph's explanation of why he would no longer fight against the U. S. Army, Westward Expansion presents a wealth of period documents, including diaries, letters, articles, advertisements, speeches, and more, from both famous figures and ordinary citizens. Find out how all of these American voices working together helped make this country what it is today.

  • The Triangle Histories of the Civil War: Battles - Battle of Gettysburg

    David C. King

Library Binding (Blackbirch Press, Sept. 1, 2001)
Triangle Histories introduce a new concept to American history series. Each title in this collection interweaves and overlaps with others in its own unique way. And each title provides a different perspective on the subject. For example, The Battle of Vicksburg, the biography Ulysses S. Grant, and the biography Abraham Lincoln, overlap and intersect at a number of points. Grant was the Union commander at Vicksburg at a time when Lincoln was under great pressure to replace the general. Because the Triangle Histories provide a format in which major subjects and themes can be considered from various angles, each collection offers a truly unique way to learn and understand the topic more completely. Each book stands alone, but as a set, the Civil War collection forms a powerful and engaging way in which to learn about one of the most painful eras our nation has ever endured.

    language (, March 17, 2018)
Jimmy Cruze, a 14-year-old boy, and his Border Collie Starr, live on a ranch outside of Payson Arizona. Set in the 1960's, when "Social Media" was reading the newspaper. Jimmy has a 16-year-old sister Jean Ann, who wants to become a professional rodeo barrel racer. Their Uncle Doug, a retired Army helicopter pilot, manages the ranch, sometimes doing it from the air in his modified Apache helicopter. The Circle C Ranch raises cattle and horses, but is also a dude ranch for guests wanting to experience ranch life. Doug's Aunt Sara manages the large ranch house, and Dusty Gillum is the ranch foreman. There are rustic bunkhouse cabins for the ranch guests to stay in. Many interesting and mysterious stories are told around the campfire.
