  • The Four Seasons of Kansas

    Daniel D. Dancer

Hardcover (University Press of Kansas, Nov. 15, 2001)
If photography is the art of writing with light, then photographer Dan Dancer has written the story of Kansas. In this beautiful volume, he has assembled a portrait of the state in its many different lights—a sunflower field at dawn, a rural Main Street in the eerie, greenish light of a summer storm, a nighttime prairie fire, and a dusty stretch of prairie in the hot light of midday. In 105 full-color photographs Dancer moves through the four seasons, capturing first the vast, spare grandeur of prairie and sky, then focusing closer, to illuminate the more intimate pieces of the Kansas landscape—the icy fur of a buffalo in winter, a solitary gravestone nearly overgrown by prairie grass. He pursues what he calls "wild space"—uncluttered landscapes that embody a quiet beauty that eludes the hurried and undiscriminating eye. Season by season, he uncovers the uncomplicated, subtle beauty of the state. This revised edition features a new preface, four new seasonal essays, and twelve new photographs replacing those found in the original 1988 edition.

  • The Time of the Magi: Four Christmas Tales

    D.A. Daniel

    language (, Dec. 3, 2017)
I discovered these four letters in a place I cannot disclose. Each of them contains a tale (or so I thought). Actually, they were not tales, but testimonies of people who had met the Magi of Bethlehem. The strangest thing is that one of the letters dates back to the first Christian centuries, one to the early Middle Ages, one, obviously, is from 1646, and the last from 1822. How the Magi got to these places at different times in history is a mystery. What I can prove and demonstrate is that these are absolutely genuine testimonies. All I have added to them are the (hopefully, but by no means certainly, adequate) titles.

  • A General History of the Pyrates

    . Daniel

    Paperback (Narcissus.me, April 29, 2017)
As the Pyrates in the West-Indies have been so formidable and numerous, that they have interrupted the Trade of Europe into those Parts; and our English Merchants, in particular, have suffered more by their Depredations, than by the united Force of France and Spain, in the late War: We do not doubt but the World will be curious to know the Original and Progress of these Desperadoes, who were the Terror of the trading Part of the World. But before we enter upon their particular History, it will not be amiss, by way of Introduction, to shew, by some Examples drawn from History, the great Mischief and Danger which threaten Kingdoms and Commonwealths, from the Increase of these sort of Robbers; when either by the Troubles of particular Times, or the Neglect of Governments, they are not crush'd before they gather Strength.
