  • The Happy Stories Collection: Harry and Lilly Find Magic

    Dan Mathews

language (Dan Mathews, May 10, 2014)
Both Harry and Lilly hate this part of the day. It is very early in the morning and the house is noisy and very busy. Their dad is, as usual, late for work and can be occasionally seen rushing between the bathroom and the kitchen at near the speed of light, which is very, very fast indeed. In fact, some say that the speed of light is even faster than a fly flies after it has been kissed by a hippopotamus. It is hard to confirm this though, as no one has managed to catch a fly after it has been kissed by a hippopotamus. They fly so very fast you see. In fact, it is thought that they fly at almost the speed of light!Tom, their older brother can be heard noisily bumping around the house as he slowly gets ready for school. Their mom can be seen casually moving around them all, quietly going about her business. To Harry and Lilly, breakfast time is mayhem. It is the peak of summer and the sun is happily dancing bright outside. During the summer, Harry and Lilly love more than anything to play in the garden from first thing in the morning until last thing at night; which for them is about three o’clock. At three o’clock, they have to go with their mom to pick Tom up from school. Each school day is the same for Harry and Lilly; their dad drops Tom off at school on his way to work and they go with their mom to pick him up again at 3:30pm.Lilly suggested that Tom might want to stay at school for an extra couple of hours during the summer months so they could have a little more time in the garden. Harry thought this was a great idea, but Tom seemed less taken with the idea for some reason.Lilly explained to Harry that it was because Tom did not understand what was at the bottom of their garden. In fact, no one other than Lilly and Harry understood what was at the bottom of their garden.Toward the end of their garden, which is about ten cars or five hundred hands long, there is a natural slope, which leads to a small stream. In the middle of autumn, the stream gushes with rainwater and fills with leaves from the trees. In the thick of winter, it freezes solid with ice and snow from Jack Frost. In the centre of spring and apart from a little blossom, the stream runs clear and teems with new life. Tadpoles can be quite pretty you know, though they stay hidden until very late spring. Some are very sleepy indeed. They stay hidden right up until summer!Harry thinks they may be solar powered, which is why we only see them once the sun is out and in full bloom. Lilly thinks Tom is solar powered because apart from school, he only goes out during the summer. From autumn through to winter and right through until spring, Tom can be found either at school or in his bedroom—hibernating.

  • The Happy Stories Collection: Harry and Lilly Discover Sushi

    Dan Mathews

language (Dan Mathews, May 17, 2014)
Lilly was feeling especially hungry by teatime. They had eaten lunch very early and they had been playing all day. Harry was less hungry than Lilly because he ate one of her sandwiches during lunch.Lilly, of course knew nothing about this as he had scoffed it down while she went to the toilet during lunch. By the time she had come back, her three-sandwich lunch had become a two-sandwich lunch. Naturally, Lilly just thought they had been given less for some reason. Not being particularly hungry at the time, she did not give it a second thought and ate down what she did have.Harry however, was not looking forward to tea quite as much on account of feeling pretty full still from his overly large lunch—thanks to his dear sister Lilly, donating one of her gorgeous sandwiches to him.Being sure she would have said no, if he had of asked for one of her sandwiches, he thought it best to not bother asking and just helped himself instead.Unfortunately, for Harry however, his sandwich exploits were not as successful as he thought. Whilst he thought their mom was not watching, she in fact was. Having seen Harry steal his sisters sandwich, their mom thought it a good idea to teach greedy little Harry a lesson.Japan, which is near Korea and China, is very famous for its fish. In particular, how they eat fish—they do not bother cooking it. No, really, they eat it raw!As it turns out, eating raw fish in this way, which is called Sushi, is very tasty indeed. However, it is widely known that only certain types of fish are eaten and especially in this way; not that Harry’s mom is going to tell Harry that. After speaking to a very nice man at a toyshop, their mom managed to buy a toy goldfish that looked very much like their own pet goldfish, Glen.Pet goldfish are very different to sushi, but Harry’s mom is banking on him not knowing that. After explaining to both Harry and Lilly, what sushi is and that it is a delicious Japanese speciality, she told them that they are having sushi for tea as a treat for being so good.Putting both of their plates of food on the table and after covering each plate with a small cloth, she called them both for tea.As they went to sit down to eat, their mom called Lilly to the other room claiming to need a hand.Watching through a crack in the door, both Lilly and their mom watched Harry take his seat and start to wait for Lilly.Knowing that he had been told that sushi was very delicious, Harry could not hold the temptation any longer. Deciding that although not very hungry, he would eat a little of his sisters tea before she got back, Harry reached over and pulled her plate close to him. After a quick check to make sure that he was not been watched, Harry pulled the cloth off Lilly’s plate and eagerly went to plunge his fingers into her food. Mere millimetres from the plate, Harry suddenly realised what was on the plate. He was sure that he was looking at Glen, their pet goldfish staring back up at him.Screeching with surprise and shock, Harry pulled his hand away so quickly he made himself fall off his seat and landed in a heap on the floor; which is where his laughing sister and mom found him moments later.Harry was relieved to find out that he had not almost eaten Glen the goldfish, but rather a plastic impersonator.

  • Great American Women in Science and Environment

    D. J. Mathews

    Paperback (Booklocker.com, Inc., July 5, 2020)
Why does anyone develop an interest in science? Why should anyone care about saving the environment? Curiosity is part of it. Curiosity, with some support and inspiration. In "Great American Women in Science and Environment," we meet some very curious women who early in life have a great interest in science and nature. Elizabeth Blackwell, the third of eight children, was needed for caretaking, but it was a sick woman who encouraged her to study to be our first woman doctor. She was accepted into Geneva College because the all male students voted yes and thought it was all a joke. But she showed up and surprised them all! Later, she would have to open her OWN hospital for women and children in order to be taken seriously. Rachel Carson's mother taught her to welcome the nature outside their door -- later she would become the family's sole breadwinner and made a living writing for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (its present name) before a friend suggested she write about the dangers of DDT. Some women "fell" into their calling, such as Erin Brockovich. She was a divorced mother of three. She had been a party girl in high school and college, but she had the learning disability of dyslexia to contend with. After a car accident required a lawyer's help, she decided to work for lawyer Ed Masry and learn more about all the sick people living in the town of Hinkley, California. Her huge lawsuit against the polluter, PG&E, made her a big celebrity when a movie was made about her life. Julia "Butterfly" Hill had not planned to spend over a year of her life in a tall redwood to protect it, but some things are just too important to ignore. And Madam C. J. Walker "had" to find a way to cure her growing baldness and get out of washing clothes in big tubs all day, which was tiring. So she became her own chemist and -- Presto -- came up with haircare products to help other African American women have products geared toward their own hair. She also helped create a sales force of black women for her products, probably her even bigger contribution to American society in the early 1900s. But there was friction in her marriage and she carried on without him. There are several others in the book whose stories of endurance, curiosity, and brave firsts should inspire young and old alike to want to work for a better future. We will need ideas on creating new sources of energy, meeting cybersecurity needs -- Grace Hopper, the mother of modern computer programming, also has a chapter -- cures of various diseases, getting people to possibly go to the planet Mars in the future. The possibilities are out there, as these young women show. Erin Brockovich spoke at Catawba College in North Carolina in 2016. One poignant thing she said was that you sometimes have to depend on yourself to make a difference in this world, like the women in "Great American Women." She said, "Sometimes, you have to be your own hero." Gertude Elion, a researcher, took this advice to heart, helping to create drugs to cure childhood leukemia, even though her supervisor George Hitchings was getting all the credit. (She finally received a Nobel Prize in 1988. Her team also created AZT, which helps AIDS virus victims survive.)
