A Treadmill Called Life is about the paths we choose to follow. In the story, Cricket isvery focused on this dream of becoming an athlete to the point that she misses a lotof what makes life fun. Brady, alternatively, has chosen to treat his education andacademics very cavalierly, neither taking school seriously nor having any type ofdirection. While both characters seem very different to one another, they are verysimilar in trying to forge out a new direction for their lives.Through her conversation with the detective, Cricket views the room, and thepractice she does in it, as somewhat of a prison and the exercise very tiring androutine. Conversely, Brady views his life as one with a lot of freedoms, even thoughhe is very irresponsible. Their perspectives of their lives culminate in the incident thatresults in the destruction of the workroom. This is very apparent in the fact that Brady will actually take action because he feelshe has more control of his life than Cricket, as she is heard throughout the textwishing she could burn the workroom down. When he burns down the text, he doesso to free her. Moreover, she sacrifices her future because he has ultimately freedher from a life that would have possibly given her fame and fortune but is veryrestricting. They both sacrifice for each other’s freedom, as Brady would have doneserious jail time for the crime.
