  • Reading Contemporary Picturebooks: Picturing Text

    David Lewis

    Hardcover (Routledge, April 30, 2001)
Reading Contemporary Picturebooks takes a look at one of the most vibrant branches of children's literature - the modern picturebook. This exciting new book takes a sample of contemporary picturebooks and closely examines the features that make them distinctive and then suggests a way of characterising the 'interanimation' of words and pictures that is the essence of the form. The reasons for the picturebook's vitality and flexibility are also explored and the close bond between the picturebook and its readers is analyzed. Advances in our understanding of how visual images are organized are examined and the book concludes with an attempt to redescribe the picturebook in such a way that pictures, readers and text may be drawn together. Picturing Text will be of interest to students, teachers and researchers interested in reading, children's literature and media studies.
  • Mrs. Cartwright and the Pygmies: Winged Dagger Chronicles The Third Book

    David N. Lewis

language (Griffin Innovative Solutions, Jan. 26, 2014)
Long ago, in a land far away a text was penned that foretold the future. Though many ancient authors have claimed legitimacy, this ancient text has proven to be one hundred percent accurate in every detail. But, some of the hidden mysteries remain behind the veil of time, at least for now. One prophesy foretold of a series of worldwide calamities that would be precursors to the culmination of all history- His return. Whether symbolic or literal, one of the pivotal events was described as the arrival in series of four horsemen. Poetically, they are referred to as the ‘Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.” The first horseman of the Apocalypse is mentioned in a part of the ancient text referred to as the Revelation of John, chapter 6: “I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.”The second horseman of the Apocalypse appears in the same text a few verses later. “Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other. To him was given a large sword.” The third horseman is described as well. “...and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, ‘A quart of wheat for a day's wages, and three quarts of barley for a day's wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!’” The fourth horseman mentioned so cryptically is described as Death. “I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.” These terrifying events are not the end, but, the beginning of even worse judgments that come later during the global times of ‘trouble.’ It is upon this impending doom and backdrop of apocryphal events that this story is woven; a story, though fiction, founded on the solid premise that the ancient text known as the Holy Bible was right. The characters in the story told here stand on the precipice of history on the edge of a trail of tears and a mountain of jubilation. However, before the laughter, the tears must come. This is where the story begins- at the tears.

  • A Nostalgic Christmas Sampler: Christmas In North Carolina During The 1950's

    David Samuel Lewis

eBook (David Samuel Lewis, Nov. 23, 2015)
Christmas for a child growing up in eastern North Carolina during the 1950’s was very different on many levels than what most children experience today. Imagine a Christmas dinner where practically everything on the table was food raised and harvested by the family and most of the gifts exchanged were handmade. Think about heading to the woods to find your Christmas tree, not just because it would be a fun thing to do, but because it was the only place to get one. Picture being excited about going to the neighborhood grocery store because you heard that they had oranges and tangerines…the only time of the year they were available. David Samuel Lewis was a child growing up in such an environment in the 1950’s, first living in a rural agricultural community and then in a neighborhood in a small town. He was fortunate to experience the best that the Christmas seasons had to offer in both locations and recaptures sweet memories of them within these pages. He presents a less complicated time filled with a lot of goodwill, heart-warming examples of family and community life, and humor as experienced from his perspective as a small boy. The insights he gathered in his childhood have paid dividends through the years. Enjoy the reading as David recalls a time in his adult life when he was far from home yet those values he learned as a child touched his life and others. Visualize that little grocery store his daddy operated, that generated a lot of Christmas spirit. This is an easy, inspiring, and humorous read that touches on things material, emotional, and spiritual and offers encouragement to recapture memories and reapply principles not only during the holidays but all year long.
