Reading Contemporary Picturebooks takes a look at one of the most vibrant branches of children's literature - the modern picturebook. This exciting new book takes a sample of contemporary picturebooks and closely examines the features that make them distinctive and then suggests a way of characterising the 'interanimation' of words and pictures that is the essence of the form. The reasons for the picturebook's vitality and flexibility are also explored and the close bond between the picturebook and its readers is analyzed. Advances in our understanding of how visual images are organized are examined and the book concludes with an attempt to redescribe the picturebook in such a way that pictures, readers and text may be drawn together. Picturing Text will be of interest to students, teachers and researchers interested in reading, children's literature and media studies.

Long ago, in a land far away a text was penned that foretold the future. Though many ancient authors have claimed legitimacy, this ancient text has proven to be one hundred percent accurate in every detail. But, some of the hidden mysteries remain behind the veil of time, at least for now. One prophesy foretold of a series of worldwide calamities that would be precursors to the culmination of all history- His return. Whether symbolic or literal, one of the pivotal events was described as the arrival in series of four horsemen. Poetically, they are referred to as the ‘Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.” The first horseman of the Apocalypse is mentioned in a part of the ancient text referred to as the Revelation of John, chapter 6: “I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.”The second horseman of the Apocalypse appears in the same text a few verses later. “Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other. To him was given a large sword.” The third horseman is described as well. “...and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, ‘A quart of wheat for a day's wages, and three quarts of barley for a day's wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!’” The fourth horseman mentioned so cryptically is described as Death. “I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.” These terrifying events are not the end, but, the beginning of even worse judgments that come later during the global times of ‘trouble.’ It is upon this impending doom and backdrop of apocryphal events that this story is woven; a story, though fiction, founded on the solid premise that the ancient text known as the Holy Bible was right. The characters in the story told here stand on the precipice of history on the edge of a trail of tears and a mountain of jubilation. However, before the laughter, the tears must come. This is where the story begins- at the tears.

There is a story behind the story.They meet fraternal twins at the orbiting angel managed special service training academy. Quickly lasting friendships begin to grow, and none too soon. The four undergo several quests that take them to the volcanic caverns deep beneath Iceland, to the Sundae Straight in Indonesia, to the mysterious mountains of Turkey, and even to outer space.They battle powerful demons and fight for good against overwhelming odds. Sometimes they win, sometimes they lose.As the story of the quests unfolds, the four become aware that the near constant demonic attacks upon them are orchestrated by none other than Jeb, Jeffery’s lost older brother.The ultimate quest the group faces is to find and save Jeffery’s brother and culminates in a dramatic and unexpected turn of events.The story has magnificent fight scenes, expertly described so you can see every move. Dramatic sword fights between angels and demons are described in amazing color and sound. Comical interludes lace the story to lighten the dramatic load of the reader. A gentle adolescent romance peeks through the plot and adds a softer dimension.What a great story. Supernatural enemies fight in the sky and around everyday places, unseen except for the adept. A catalog of fantastic powers is pulled from the pages of scripture and the imagination of Mr. Lewis. You will feel as if you were along for every quest and walked through the same places as you too, undertake the Lost, Then Found adventure.
