  • Handprints on Hubble: An Astronaut's Story of Invention

    Kathryn D. Sullivan

Hardcover (The MIT Press, Nov. 5, 2019)
The first American woman to walk in space recounts her experience as part of the team that launched, rescued, repaired, and maintained the Hubble Space Telescope. The Hubble Space Telescope has revolutionized our understanding of the universe. It has, among many other achievements, revealed thousands of galaxies in what seemed to be empty patches of sky; transformed our knowledge of black holes; found dwarf planets with moons orbiting other stars; and measured precisely how fast the universe is expanding. In Handprints on Hubble, retired astronaut Kathryn Sullivan describes her work on the NASA team that made all of this possible. Sullivan, the first American woman to walk in space, recounts how she and other astronauts, engineers, and scientists launched, rescued, repaired, and maintained Hubble, the most productive observatory ever built.Along the way, Sullivan chronicles her early life as a “Sputnik Baby,” her path to NASA through oceanography, and her initiation into the space program as one of “thirty-five new guys.” (She was also one of the first six women to join NASA's storied astronaut corps.) She describes in vivid detail what liftoff feels like inside a spacecraft (it's like “being in an earthquake and a fighter jet at the same time”), shows us the view from a spacewalk, and recounts the temporary grounding of the shuttle program after the Challenger disaster.Sullivan explains that “maintainability” was designed into Hubble, and she describes the work of inventing the tools and processes that made on-orbit maintenance possible. Because in-flight repair and upgrade was part of the plan, NASA was able to fix a serious defect in Hubble's mirrors―leaving literal and metaphorical “handprints on Hubble.” Handprints on Hubble was published with the support of the MIT Press Fund for Diverse Voices.
  • No Man's Land: the untold story of automation and QF72

    Kevin Sullivan

eBook (ABC Books, June 1, 2019)
A gripping account of how a major air disaster was averted, by the captain and former Top Gun pilot Instinctively, I release my pressure on the sidestick. Out of my subconscious, a survival technique from a previous life emerges: Neutralise! I'm not in control so I must neutralise controls. I never imagined I'd use this part of my military experience in a commercial airliner ...On routine flight QF72 from Singapore to Perth on 7 October 2008, the primary flight computers went rogue, causing the plane to pitch down, nose first, towards the Indian Ocean - twice. The Airbus A330 carrying 315 passengers and crew was out of control, with violent negative G forces propelling anyone and anything untethered through the cabin roof.It took the skill and discipline of veteran US Navy Top Gun Kevin Sullivan, captain of the ill-fated flight, to wrestle the plane back under control and perform a high-stakes emergency landing at a RAAF base on the WA coast 1200 kilometres north of Perth. In No Man's Land, the captain of the flight tells the full story for the first time. It's a gripping, blow-by-blow account of how, along with his co-pilots, Sullivan relied on his elite military training to land the gravely malfunctioning plane and narrowly avert what could have been a horrific air disaster. As automation becomes the way of the future, and in the aftermath of Ethiopian Airlines flight 302 and Lion Air flight JT610, the story of QF72 raises important questions about how much control we relinquish to computers and whether more checks and balances are needed.

    Perry D. Sullivan

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, May 3, 2013)
Lost Flowers: True Stories of the Moonshine King, Percy Flowers is the never-before-told account of the notorious North Carolina bootlegger, as recalled by his son, Perry Sullivan. In the backwoods of Clayton, North Carolina, in the first half of the twentieth century, life may have been harsh, but whiskey could be found that was smooth, clear, and potent. Especially if it was the product of moonshine kingpin Joshua Percy Flowers, the legendary bootlegger who amassed a small fortune from the making of white lightning. Flowers’ son, Perry Sullivan, breaks decades of silence to share his firsthand account of the whiskey making, cockfighting, and foxhound-racing ways of this rough-hewn but surprisingly wise wheeler and dealer. Lost Flowers: True Stories of the Moonshine King, Percy Flowers offers a poignant glimpse into a world that time has all but forgotten, recounting both the painful experiences and abiding lessons learned from a hard-bitten man who boasted 200-proof authenticity. Reflective, gentle, and peppered with folksy humor, this colorful story set in the Deep South lays bare the author’s own secret as the unacknowledged son of the famous bootlegger. Told through the eyes of Perry Sullivan, the memoir is addressed to his own two sons, with the intention of passing on the wisdom he gleaned from his early years.
