  • Natural Gain in the Grazing Lands of Southern Australia

    D Smith

Paperback (University of New South Wales Press, Oct. 1, 2000)
Sure to be controversial, Natural Gain challenges many of the contemporary ideas about the almost inexorable environmental devastation of the Australian continent since the time of white colonization, 200 years ago. The core theme of Natural Gain is that, at least in the case of Australia's temperate grasslands, the introduction of agricultural systems has often created dynamic and sustaining ecosystems. Smith argues that, largely by increasing soil fertility, these new ecosystems have made an immense contribution to the building of the nation.
