  • The Log of a Cowboy: A Narrative of the Old Trail Days

    Andy Adams

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, May 17, 2017)
The Log of a Cowboy: A Narrative of the Old Trail Days "Just why my father moved, at the close of the civil war, from Georgia to Texas, is to this good hour a mystery to me. While we did not exactly belong to the poor whites, we classed with them in poverty, being renters; but I am inclined to think my parents were intellectually superior to that common type of the South. Both were foreign born, my mother being Scotch and my father a north of Ireland man, - as I remember him, now, impulsive, hasty in action, and slow to confess a fault. It was his impulsiveness that led him to volunteer and serve four years in the Confederate army." "The Log of a Cowboy: A Narrative of the Old Trail Days" has a beautiful glossy cover and a blank page for the dedication.

"If ever there were such a thing as an all-time 'best' western, The Log of a Cowboy is it." The New York Times “As a narrative of cowboy life, Andy Adams' book is clearly the real thing. It carries its own certificate of authentic first-hand experience on every page.” -The Chicago Herald “If all other books on trail-driving were destroyed, a reader could still get a just as authentic conception of trail men, trail work, range cattle, cow horses, and the cow country in general from The Log of a Cowboy.” -- J. Frank Dobie "Personal and often poignant.…'The Log of a Cowboy' is indeed a classic." --Sybil Downing, The Denver Post Oklahoma was still "Indian Territory," Little Big Horn was a recent memory, and Native Americans were in the last shameful stages of being forced off the open rangeland. In "The Log of a Cowboy," Adams captures the excitement and the reality of the old West, including routine days and nights punctuated by episodes of another kind: a rigged horse race, in which the cowboys lose several hundred dollars in wagers, two saloon shootings, the breakdown of the chuck wagon, pulling cattle out of a boggy river, meeting potentially hostile Indians, an encounter with cattle thieves, and a long drive across a waterless expanse of Wyoming. Born in Indiana in 1859, Andy Adams is celebrated as one of the most important chronicles of the range cattle industry and the fictional cowboy. Originally published in 1903, The Log of a Cowboy is based on his experiences there and has long been considered his best and well known work. CONTENTS I. UP THE TRAIL II. RECEIVING III. • The Log of a Cowboy

    Andy Adams

    MP3 CD (IDB Productions, Sept. 3, 2016)
The complete title of this gem by Andy Adams is The Log of a Cowboy A Narrative of the Old Trail Days and the story is that indeed, a narrative about a boy, around 18 years of age, who joins a group of grown-up men who are driving a pack of three thousand cattle from Mexico to an Indian reservation in Montana. The year it all takes place is around 1880, the golden age of cowboys and western stories and the book was indeed called an “all-time best” by none other than The New York Times. The crew and the herd they are driving go through all sorts of adventures, some exciting, others funny or downright dangerous. They must cross wild rivers, they meet hostile Indians, they must endure drought and they must resist the tricks of swindlers. The narrative is fictional, but it relies on the author’s own life experience – born in Indiana, in a family of pioneers, Andy Adams worked for more than a decade as a cattle herder in Texas and started writing cowboy stories after he settled in Colorado Springs. He knows the life of herders from the inside – he uses their vernacular in the narrative and he expresses a deep and sympathetic understanding of these men who were tough on the outside, but gentle and loyal in their soul. The book is full of interesting characters, but it does not lack beautiful descriptions of the nature surrounding the crew as they progress towards their destination. They follow the Great Western Cattle Trail, also known as the Old Trail, that began at San Antonio and continued through the Buffalo Gap and all the way to Nebraska – a trail that takes the best, the toughest and the bravest to pursue, making it perfect for the herders in the book.

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Nov. 15, 2013)
The Log of a Cowboy A Narrative of the Old Trail Days By Andy Adams Just why my father moved, at the close of the civil war, from Georgia to Texas, is to this good hour a mystery to me. While we did not exactly belong to the poor whites, we classed with them in poverty, being renters; but I am inclined to think my parents were intellectually superior to that common type of the South. Both were foreign born, my mother being Scotch and my father a north of Ireland man,—as I remember him, now, impulsive, hasty in action, and slow to confess a fault. It was his impulsiveness that led him to volunteer and serve four years in the Confederate army,—trying years to my mother, with a brood of seven children to feed, garb, and house. The war brought me my initiation as a cowboy, of which I have now, after the long lapse of years, the greater portion of which were spent with cattle, a distinct recollection. Sherman's army, in its march to the sea, passed through our county, devastating that section for miles in its passing. The American frontier comprises the geography, history, folklore, and cultural expression of life in the forward wave of American westward expansion that began with English colonial settlements in the early 17th century and ended with the admission of the last mainland territories as states in the early 20th century. Enormous popular attention in the media focuses on the Western United States in the second half of the nineteenth century, a period sometimes called the Old West, or the Wild West. Western fiction is a genre of literature set in the American Old West frontier and typically set from the late eighteenth to the late nineteenth century. Well-known writers of Western fiction include Zane Grey from the early 1900s and Louis L'Amour from the mid 20th century. The genre peaked around the early 1960s, largely due to the popularity of televised Westerns such as Bonanza. Readership began to drop off in the mid- to late 1970s and has reached a new low in the 2000s. Most bookstores, outside of a few west American states, only carry a small number of Western fiction books.

  • The Outlet: By Andy Adams - Illustrated

    Andy Adams

Paperback (Independently published, Aug. 3, 2017)
How is this book unique? Font adjustments & biography included Unabridged (100% Original content) Illustrated About The Outlet by Andy Adams Andy Adams was an American writer best known for his western fiction. Adams was born and raised on a farm in Indiana and helped with the cattle and horses. The Outlet is a novel that gives a great portrayal of the lives of cattle drivers in the late 19th century. Andy Adams worked as a cowboy on trail drives from Texas for eight years. This is an account of a drive when he was the foreman of a herd of Texas cattle being driven to Montana. Expect the same quality writing as found in other books by Adams. Extract: At the close of the civil war the need for a market for the surplus cattle of Texas was as urgent as it was general. There had been numerous experiments in seeking an outlet, and there is authority for the statement that in 1857 Texas cattle were driven to Illinois. Eleven years later forty thousand head were sent to the mouth of Red River in Louisiana, shipped by boat to Cairo, Illinois, and thence inland by rail. Fever resulted, and the experiment was never repeated. To the west of Texas stretched a forbidding desert, while on the other hand, nearly every drive to Louisiana resulted in financial disaster to the drover. The republic of Mexico, on the south, afforded no relief, as it was likewise overrun with a surplus of its own breeding. Immediately before and just after the war, a slight trade had sprung up in cattle between eastern points on Red River and Baxter Springs, in the southeast corner of Kansas. The route was perfectly feasible, being short and entirely within the reservations of the Choctaws and Cherokees, civilized Indians. This was the only route to the north; for farther to the westward was the home of the buffalo and the unconquered, nomadic tribes. A writer on that day, Mr. Emerson Hough, an acceptable authority, says: "The civil war stopped almost all plans to market the range cattle, and the close of that war found the vast grazing lands of Texas fairly covered with millions of cattle which had no actual or determinate value. They were sorted and branded and herded after a fashion, but neither they nor their increase could be converted into anything but more cattle. The demand for a market became imperative."
