"The Log of a Cowboy” is an account of a five-month drive of 3,000 cattle from Brownsville, Texas, to Montana during 1882 along the Great Western Cattle Trail. Although the book is fiction, it is based on Adams's own experiences, and it is considered by many to be literature's best account of cowboy life. Adams was disgusted by the unrealistic cowboy fiction being published in his time; The Log of a Cowboy was his response. The Chicago Herald has said: "As a narrative of cowboy life, Andy Adams' book is clearly the real thing. It carries its own certificate of authentic first-hand experience on every page.” This edition also includes Adams other famous western novels like The Outlet, A Texas Matchmaker, Reed Anthony, Cowman and The Wells Brothers.Andy Adams (1859–1935) was an American writer of western fiction and was born in Indiana. Since childhood Andy used to help his parents with the cattle and horses on the family farm. Due to this Andy's works have been lauded widely for his first hand and authentic portrayal of the life of a cowboy unlike his contemporaries like Owen Wister who romanticized it.

  • The Outlet

    Andy Adams

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Sept. 29, 2015)
At the close of the civil war the need for a market for the surplus cattle of Texas was as urgent as it was general. Then began the great exodus of Texas cattle. The red men were easily confined on reservations, and the vacated country in the Northwest became cattle ranges. The government was in the market for large quantities of beef with which to feed its army and Indian wards. The history of the world can show no pastoral movement in comparison. The Northwest had furnished the market--the outlet for Texas.

    Andy Adams

    eBook (Digireads.com Publishing, Feb. 10, 2020)
First published in 1903, “The Log of a Cowboy: A Narrative of the Old Trail Days” by American author Andy Adams is the fascinating and captivating tale of an 1882 cattle drive of 3,000 head of cattle up the Great Western Trail from the Rio Grande to just south of the Canadian border in Montana. While written as a fictional narrative, “The Log of a Cowboy” is rich with authentic detail of the old west, due largely to the fact that the author Adams spent more than a decade in Texas in the 1880s driving cattle. The drive took five months from Brownsville, Texas to Northern Montana and the tale of the journey is full of dangerous river crossings, escapes from stampedes, gunfights between the cowboys, and fascinating characters, such as Bull Durham and Bill Blades. A delightful story of a bygone era, “The Log of a Cowboy” is considered to this day to be one of the most realistic depictions of cowboy life and cattle drives ever written. Adams’s tale of adventure and hard work on the frontier will entertain fans of the western genre and old west history buffs alike.
