  • Tracks Rivers Roads: Across Nebraska on the Meridian Highway

    Cheryl Riege

Paperback (Outskirts Press, April 20, 2012)
In the fourth grade, I discovered a wonderful series of biographies. Each book began with the character's childhood and was written to make historical events come alive for the young history student. A foundation was laid for me in these books. While studying to be a history teacher I often reflected back on those little histories I read as a child. It has long been my intention to write a series of books about Nebraska history to enrich the textbook studies. The stories pivot around an historical event in Nebraska which has warranted a Nebraska Historical Marker. There is one exception. There is no historical marker for my first book in the Marker Book Series: She held them in her arms: The Story of Loie Royce, School Teacher and the Blizzard of 1888...yet. Most Nebraskans are aware of the Blizzard of 1888. It is often referred to as The School Children's Blizzard. Loie's story evokes feelings of empathy, horror, admiration, and hope. Readers get a close look at the early settlers of the state of Nebraska and the battles they faced out on the prairies. The second book in the series, Tracks Rivers Roads, evolves from an historical marker in Pierce County Nebraska, marking the international Meridian Highway that traverses across Nebraska from Chester to the crossing at Aten. The building of this highway began in 1911. At its completion, it stretched from the Mexican border at Laredo, Texas to the Canadian border at Winnipeg, following the 97th meridian. The central character, Norris, moves to Chester, Nebraska in 1910, when his father, who works for the railroads is transferred there. After WWI, the United States suffered an economic recession. Thousands of people were out of work during. Norris's father is laid off from his job. During this difficult time, Norris's mother, originally from St. Helena, receives a letter from her mother, which informs the family that there is an upcoming teaching position in St. Helena, which is on the Nebraska side of the Missouri
