Hardcover (Forgotten Books, Oct. 12, 2017)
Excerpt from Hints to PilgrimsAnd then there are the electric signs - the mammoth kitten rolling its ball of silk, ginger-ale that forever issues from a bottle, a fiery motor with a flame of dust, the Wrigley triplets correcting their sluggish livers by exercise alongside the Astor roof. Surely letters despatched home to Kalamazoo deal excitedly with these flashing portents. And of the railroad stations and the Woolworth Tower with its gothic pinnacles questing into heaven, what pilgrim words are ade quate! Here, certainly, Kalamazoo is baffled and must halt and bite its pen.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • Plish and Plum. From the German of Wilhelm Busch

    Charles T. Brooks

Paperback (Leopold Classic Library, Oct. 27, 2015)
About the Book The concept of Germany as a distinct region can be traced to Julius Caesar, who referred to the unconquered area east of the Rhine as "Germania", which distinguished it from Gaul (France). In the Late Middle Ages, the regional dukes, princes and bishops gained power at the expense of the emperors, and Martin Luther led the Protestant Reformation against the Catholic Church after 1517. The northern German states became Protestant, while the south remained Catholic. These two parts of the Holy Roman Empire clashed in the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648). The separate German states that ensued were gathered back into a single German state by Otto von Bismarck, forming the German Empire in 1871. Germany's industrial power grew over the decades leading to World War 1, which was again ruinous for the country. The rise of Nazism and Adolph Hitler in the 1930s resulted a second ruinous war that cost the lives of 9 million Germans, 6 million Jews, and tens of millions of others. Since World War 2 Germany has prospered and become a leading member of the European Union. Also in this Book Continental European drama has a rich history. In Germany during the 19th century there was a revolution in theater architecture, and the introduction of German Romanticism. German writers increasingly focussed on their Teutonic past and promoted nationalism in the plays of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and Friedrich Schiller. In time, Romanticism was adopted in France through the plays of Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, Alfred de Musset, and George Sand. European dramatists who were awarded the Nobel Prizes included Jose Echagaray and Jacinto Benavente (Spain), Paul Heyse and Paul Heyse (Germany), and Maurice Maeterlinck (Belgium). And in this Book Germany is in Western and central Europe. Germany is mainly covered in arable land, forest and woodlands. Roughly 11% of the country is covered in settlements. It is a heavily populated country and has the highest population as a country in the European union. It is home to the Brandenburg Gate and Checkpoint Charlie. Germany has the largest economy in Europe and is the world’s third largest exporter.
