  • Melmoth the Wanderer

    Charles Maturin

Paperback (Dover Publications, April 19, 2017)
A student visits his dying uncle and upon noticing a centuries-old painting of a distant relative is told, "the original is still alive … you shall see him again." Thus begins a tale of transformation, loneliness, and evil that centers on a Faustian bargain. Melmoth the Wanderer wins an extra 150 years of life but risks eternal hellfire unless he can find someone to take his place. With all the devil's powers at his command, he floats restlessly across oceans and continents, preying upon the innocent as well as the guilty, seeking out desperate and tortured souls and trying to shift the burden of his damnation.Author Charles Maturin, an Irish clergyman, wrote Melmoth the Wanderer in 1820. His inventive and original tale is considered both the last of the great Gothic novels and the forerunner of a new school epitomized by the works of Edgar Allan Poe and Bram Stoker. The book attracted a cult following that included Baudelaire and Balzac and was later characterized by H. P. Lovecraft as "an enormous stride in the evolution of the horror-tale," and cited by Thomas M. Disch as a classic fantasy story. Narrated in a nested series of stories-within-a-story, this moody fable continues to enchant lovers of Gothic romance.

  • 1493: How Europe's Discovery of the Americas Revolutionized Trade, Ecology and Life on Earth

    Charles Mann

Paperback (Granta Books, Nov. 15, 2012)
Two hundred million years ago the earth consisted of a single vast continent, Pangea, surrounded by a great planetary sea. Continental drift tore apart Pangaea, and for millennia the hemispheres were separate, evolving almost entirely different suites of plants and animals. Columbus's arrival in the Americas brought together these long-separate worlds. Many historians believe that this collision of ecosystems and cultures-the Columbian Exchange-was the most consequential event in human history since the Neolithic Revolution. And it was the most consequential event in biological history since the extinction of the dinosaurs. Beginning with the world of microbes and moving up the species ladder to mankind, Mann rivetingly describes the profound effect this exchanging of species had on the culture of both continents.

After five difficult years, he fell in love with Daley Cross, an angelic voice in need of a song. As their friendship grows and he realizes his love for her, he’s framed for a crime, shot, and left to die in a house on fire. Miraculously, he survives but the damage is severe: he can no longer sing or play music. He quietly returns home to the mountains of Colorado, hoping to answer the questions that plague him. With forgiveness and reconciliation a distant dream, Cooper searches for a way to use his gifts for others—always hoping that somewhere along the way redemption will come within reach.
