  • The Adventures Of Ulysses

    Charles Lamb

Paperback (ICON Group International, Inc., June 3, 2008)
Webster's edition of this classic is organized to expose the reader to a maximum number of synonyms and antonyms for difficult and often ambiguous English words that are encountered in other works of literature, conversation, or academic examinations. Extremely rare or idiosyncratic words and expressions are given lower priority in the notes compared to words which are ¿difficult, and often encountered¿ in examinations. Rather than supply a single synonym, many are provided for a variety of meanings, allowing readers to better grasp the ambiguity of the English language, and avoid using the notes as a pure crutch. Having the reader decipher a word's meaning within context serves to improve vocabulary retention and understanding. Each page covers words not already highlighted on previous pages. If a difficult word is not noted on a page, chances are that it has been highlighted on a previous page. A more complete thesaurus is supplied at the end of the book; synonyms and antonyms are extracted from Webster's Online Dictionary. • Tales from Shakespeare

    Charles Lamb

Paperback (Forgotten Books, June 10, 2012)
A irr FROM THE LIBRARY OF PROF. GEORGE F. SWAIN OCT. 20, 1933 EDITORS NOTE. TN order to adapt Lamb sT ales of Shakespeare to the use of children in the schools, it has been found necessary to make a few verbal alterations, and to omit entirely the story Measure forM easure. It also seemed wise to omit the portion of Lamb sP reface especially applicable toE nglish schools, as the following quotation would indicate: Instead of recommending these Tales to the perusal of young gentlemen, who can read them so much better in the originals, their kind assistance is rather requested in explaining to their sisters such parts as are hardest to understand. Such a recommendation would be hardly appreciated in our schools, where the misses have equal advantages with their brothers, and do not feel the need of such assistance. The pronunciation of the more difficult proper names has been given on page 311. Gr. J. 8.
