    Charles Henry Hart

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Oct. 29, 2017)
Excerpt from A Historical Sketch of the National Medals Issued Pursuant to Resolution of Congress, 1776-1815: A Paper Read Before "the Numismatic and Antiquarian Society of Philadelphia," Thursday Evening, November 1 and 15, 1866I propose to read before the Society this evening, a brief memoir of the National Medals awarded by Congress during the Revolutionary War, the quasi French War, and the War of 1812. This idea suggested itself to me, by reading in the Evening Bulletin last week, an article copied from the New York Sun, on this same subject; but this article was so full of blunders and gross and ridiculous errors, that it was calculated more to mislead than to direct any one in the pursuit of their investigations. They number forty-one.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • The Wonders of Modern Mechanism: A Résumé of Recent Progress in Mechanical, Physical, and Engineering Science

    Charles Henry Cochrane

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Jan. 31, 2018)
Excerpt from The Wonders of Modern Mechanism: A Résumé of Recent Progress in Mechanical, Physical, and Engineering ScienceThe number and value of inventions have increased so rapidly of recent years that the public has come to accept the most marvellous innovations with a readiness that soon makes of them an old story. While there are thousands of people alive to-day who remember the first railroad, the first steamboat, and the first telegraph, we have among us a younger generation who never knew what it was to be without the electric light, the telephone, the electric railway, or the mammoth daily newspaper. The genera tion that is to come will live in an age of new wonders, and surrounded by new creature conveniences, a few of which we can discern darkly. Some day, mayhap, this book will fall into the hands of some favored one living in an age made vastly more brilliant than our own, and he may smile at the so-called progress here recorded that marks the close of the nineteenth century. Let such an one reflect that there is beyond him a higher and a wider and a greater field of undiscovered knowledge, and that he, too, in his turn, will some day sleep with the useless, lumbering relics of the past.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • The wonders of modern mechanism. A résumé of recent progress in mechanical, physical, and engineering science

    Charles Henry Cochrane

Paperback (Ulan Press, Aug. 31, 2012)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
