Charles Sherlock Fillmore (1854 -1948) founded Unity, a church within the New Thought movement, with his wife, Myrtle Page Fillmore, in 1889. He became known as an American mystic for his contributions to spiritualist interpretations of biblical Scripture. In this work he attempts a metaphysical textbook on Genesis, the world's best known but perhaps, according to Fillmore, its least understood allegory. It deals with the highlights of Genesis, omitting genealogies and such matters as would interest those trying to establish an historical interpretation. The study is designed to show the origin of man as a perfect image or idea in Divine Mind; how this I AM image, called Jehovah God, forms the man idea into the man manifest, and how this man manifest must eventually become conscious both of his divine origin and his divine potentiality to become the God-man idea manifest, or the Christ.

Two years later, in 1886, Charles and Myrtle attended New Thought classes held by Dr. E. B. Weeks. Myrtle subsequently recovered from chronic tuberculosis and attributed her recovery to her use of prayer and other methods learned in Weeks's classes. Subsequently Charles began to heal from his childhood accident, a development which he too attributed to following this philosophy. Charles Fillmore became a devoted student of philosophy and religion.[5]In 1889, Charles left his business to focus entirely on a prayer group that would later be called 'Silent Unity'. It was named this because of a legal conflict with Mary Baker Eddy over the use of the title Christian Science. ForewordTHE BOOK OF GENESIS is the key to the Bible. In the New Testament it is quotedtwenty-seven times literally and thirty-eight times substantially. It tells in a very fewwords how God first imaged man and the universe and then turned the developmentover to Jehovah, who has been in a process of manifestation for ages and aeons.The "Five Books of Moses," of which Genesis is the first, have always been creditedto Moses, but that he was the author seems doubtful in the face of the many stories ofcreation found in the legends and hieroglyphs of ancient Egypt, Chaldea, and othernations that are almost identical with those of Genesis. It would thus seem that Mosesedited the legends of the ages and compiled them into an allegorical history of creation.As printed in English translations there is little to reconcile Genesis with creation asrevealed by modern geology. It is said that Hugh Miller, the brilliant Scottish geologist,went insane in his efforts to reconcile Genesis with the geological record. However moreaccurate translations of the Hebrew show that the literal reading of the English is oftennot warranted by the original text. For example, the English Bible reads, "In thebeginning God created the heavens and the earth." Fentons translation renders it thus:"By periods God created that which produced the Suns; then that which produced theEarth." When we realize that God is mind (Spirit-mind), we see that this latter renditionis correct. God creates the ideas that form the things. Here we have the key thatunlocks not only the mysteries of Genesis but the whole Bible. God's creations arealways spiritual. This includes the spiritual man, called Jehovah, through whom allthings, including personal man, Adam, are brought into manifestation.
