  • David Crockett, Scout

    Charles Allen

    language (, March 28, 2019)
The story of David Crockett stands apart from all others in our history—a nebulous collection of traditions about a great array of facts. To the unnumbered thousands to whom his name is familiar he is often as unreal as the hero of a medieval romance or of Scandinavian mythology. This book will follow his history with close attention to dates, and without recognition of the impossible legends of many writers. This book is a further chronicle of the many doings of "Davy" in the East and in the new Southwest. The reader will be held spell-bound by his exploits as an Indian fighter, bear hunter, statesman and defender of the Alamo. And besides this, "Davy" has a way with him that compels the love and admiration of everybody. This book is a fascinating escape into a stirring time in United States history. Written on about a sixth grade level, it can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. It is hoped that this unpretentious volume may help to a better understanding of the life and motives of a man whose footsteps went into no dark places, and who died an honor to his countrymen—a hero sans peur et sans reproche.
  • Indian Scout Craft and Lore

    Charles A. Eastman

eBook (Dover Publications, Dec. 25, 2012)
The life of the Indian boy — living close to nature, learning the ways of the wild animals, playing games and learning stories that developed the strength of body and spirit — has long been noted for its ability to develop character. In this book Charles Eastman ("Ohiyesa"), a full-blooded Sioux Indian raised as a young warrior in the 1870's and 80's, describes that life — the lessons he learned, games he played, and feelings about life that he developed as he worked to become a young Indian scout.Among the many areas of craft and lore described are the physical training of young boys, making friends with the wild animals, learning the language of footprints, hunting with slingshot and bow and arrow, trapping and fishing, making canoes, setting up camp, building wigwams and other shelters, making fire without matches and cooking without pots, blazing a trail, using Indian signals, gesture language and picture-writing, reading the signs of nature and storytelling, as well as information on winter and summer sports of the Indian boys, names and ceremonies of Indian boys and Indian girls, and the etiquette of the wigwam. Throughout, not only the practices but the reasons and feelings behind them are described. Twenty seven illustrations show many of the crafts and signs described.Scouts and others who enjoy camping and learning the lessons of outdoor life will find in this book not only new ideas but a feeling of life as it was lived by young Indian boys and girls nearly a century ago. In learning the lessons described in this book you will make new discoveries — about nature, about outdoor life, and about yourself.

  • A Texas Cowboy

    Charles A. Siringo

    eBook (Digireads.com Publishing, Jan. 1, 2013)
"A Texas Cowboy" was one of the first true looks into life as a cowboy. Its author, Charles A. Siringo, was born in Dodge City, Kansas and at the age of 15 started working on local ranches as a cowboy and participated over the course of his ranching career in many cattle drives. A highly influential work that romanticized the life of a cowboy and the Old West, Siringo's book tells an autobiographical account of riding the famous Chisholm Trail and driving 2500 head of cattle from Texas to Kansas, of leading a posse of cowboys in pursuit of Billy the Kid and his gang, and of life in general as a cowboy in the great plains during the 19th century. As the first chapter in the life of Siringo, who would later seek further career adventure as a Pinkerton detective, we find in "A Texas Cowboy" a hugely influential autobiography that gives the reader great insight into this period of time and this type of lifestyle from one of the most interesting characters to have lived it.

    Charles Ray

eBook (Uhuru Press, Sept. 2, 2017)
When Ed Lazenby let his friends talk him into being a volunteer tutor at a local middle school, he figured it would be boring, but easy, and it was only for a couple of hours, three days a week. It’s not as if he had anything more important to do, anyway. But, when the school principal is found stabbed to death in his office, by Ed of all people, life becomes anything but simple. There’s no shortage of suspects, but Ed has to find out how the killer got into the school with the weapon, and out again without being seen. His motives are personal; on the one hand, he’s an amateur sleuth who can’t resist sticking his nose into a crime, and the other—he’s one of the suspects. He knows he’s innocent, but can he find the real killer before a couple of overzealous detectives decide he’s their man?
