  • Black Diamonds: The Downfall of an Aristocratic Dynasty and the Fifty Years That Changed England

    Catherine Bailey

Paperback (Penguin Books, Dec. 30, 2014)
From the New York Times–bestselling author of The Secret Rooms, the extraordinary true story of the downfall of one of England’s wealthiest familiesFans of Downton Abbey now have a go-to resource for fascinating, real-life stories of the spectacular lives led by England’s aristocrats. With the novelistic flair and knack for historical detail Catherine Bailey displayed in her New York Times bestseller The Secret Rooms, Black Diamonds provides a page-turning chronicle of the Fitzwilliam coal-mining dynasty and their breathtaking Wentworth estate, the largest private home in England. When the sixth Earl Fitzwilliam died in 1902, he left behind the second largest estate in twentieth-century England, valued at more than £3 billion of today’s money—a lifeline to the tens of thousands of people who worked either in the family’s coal mines or on their expansive estate. The earl also left behind four sons, and the family line seemed assured. But was it? As Bailey retraces the Fitzwilliam family history, she uncovers a legacy riddled with bitter feuds, scandals (including Peter Fitzwilliam’s ill-fated affair with American heiress Kick Kennedy), and civil unrest as the conflict between the coal industry and its miners came to a head. Once again, Bailey has written an irresistible and brilliant narrative history.

  • Word of Mouth: Poems Featured on NPR's All Things Considered

    Catherine Bowman

    Paperback (Vintage, March 11, 2003)
Starting in 1995, NPR’s All Things Considered began presenting poets reading their own works. Introduced by “poetry DJ” Catherine Bowman, these popular short segments allowed listeners to experience poetry as a kind of verbal music, recalling its roots as a spoken art form. Word of Mouth, edited by Bowman, brings together the poems that have been featured on NPR, providing a window onto the dynamic contemporary poetry scene. A child playing with flashes of sunlight in the aisle of an airplane; a woman describing tropical fruit to someone in a faraway country; a man building a deck with his dead father’s hammer; the musings of a Barbie doll participating in a 12-step program: these poems powerfully and lyrically transform the stuff of every day life. A celebration of the poetic voice that includes 33 acclaimed writers, this vibrant anthology proves beyond any doubt that poetry is far more than just words on paper.Quincy Troupe • Czeslaw Milosz • Campbell McGrath • C.D. • The Adventure to the Lost Palace

    Catherine Bowness

    eBook
A traditional story involving a magic carpet is given a new twist. Ezra, aged eleven, and Violet, aged six, arrive at their grandmother’s house for half-term. It isn’t long before they leave it again – this time on a magic carpet. They soon discover the carpet has a mind of its own and will not do as it is told. It’s in charge. What does it want and why has it fetched an old lady and her grandchildren? Where has it taken them? Will they get home safely? And which of the characters, both human and animal, mean well and which don’t? This story will appeal to children aged about 9-12. Younger children, aged 6-9, will enjoy having it read aloud to them. There is a longer version, The Lost Palace, for grown-ups, which follows the adventures of the grandmother as well as the children. The two together make a lovely pair for grandparents (and maybe parents) and children; each can read their own version and compare notes at the end of the day - just as the people in the story do.
  • The Last Catalyst

    H.B. Catherine

eBook (Bookish Dreams LLC, Dec. 20, 2019)
Anastasia has never really fit in here with her off-standish attitude, strange looks, and awkward demeanor, being brought here as an infant to escape the decades long civil war raging in Magiahortus between the Catalyst and Spongos Clans. Not that her social ineptness was entirely her fault; she was trained, as all Magieks are, to control her emotions and in such an emotionally riddled place, that was not the easiest task for a teenager. In fear of being found out and imprisoned or ridiculed as the “witches” and “magicians” before them (where did you think the term magician was coined or all those witches they burned came from?), she was raised in seclusion with her caretaker, Vivian; only being allowed to attend high school. So, when a Hunter of her realm, sent by the Spongos Lord Stefan attacks her in her home and Vivian disappears, Anastasia is forced to run to the only friend she has, a human named Marion. Quickly traced to Marion’s home, a Hunter captures them and out of fear, she accidentally summons a force unknown to her, putting their quest into motion. Setting out to rescue Vivian, she and Marion discover that the rift amongst the realms has reopened and the only way back is a key that has never been found – uncovering the secrets and lies that Anastasia was raised on along the way.
