Edwina Sparrow has all the usual teenage girl concerns; career choices, boyfriend, school bullies and, oh yes, her mother is trying to kill her. Edwina begins a journal in order to leave evidence should there be a murder inquiry. With Edwina's father away in Antarctica, brother Julian hopeless as usual and Gran thinking she is sixteen again with World War II going on, Edwina must cope alone. The household is chaotic with Gran digging bomb shelters, tearing up their sheets for bandages and making socks for the soldiers out of the family's jumpers. Edwina's mother has them all on cabbage soup diet and Edwina is both starving and shockingly flatulent. Her gastronomic wind even alienates her steadfast boyfriend McKenzie. The school front is not much better. Girls begin toppling off their chairs in the classrooms suffering from a raging dieting epidemic. Edwina suspects the school bully Krystal Shard and her gang, The Gems (Amber, Jade, Ruby and Gemma), are responsible. It is up to Edwina, operating on barely enough sustenance for even a person with an ordinary-sized intellect, to save herself and family, stop Krystal and find out what is really going on with her mother.Edwina uncovers some family secrets she has not been privy to because she is arrogant and manipulative. This would send most people into a soul-searching depression, but not Edwina. Her unwavering self-belief sees her rising to the challenge and taking control. At home and at school she saves the day. Ultimately her nickname changes from 'Nerd-wina' to 'Ed-winner'.
