  • The Nucleation of the Uncontaminated Atmosphere

    Barus Carl

Paperback (HardPress Publishing, Jan. 28, 2013)
Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

  • Experiments with the displacement interferometer

    Carl Barus

Paperback (Leopold Classic Library, July 28, 2015)
Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

We appreciate your understanding of the imperfections in the preservation process, and hope you enjoy this valuable book.
  • The Nucleation of the Uncontaminated Atmosphere

    Carl Barus

Hardcover (Forgotten Books, Dec. 22, 2017)
Excerpt from The Nucleation of the Uncontaminated AtmosphereThe air to be treated in the present series of experiments is, therefore, continually approaching a state of purity so far as foreign admixtures are concerned. Hence the properties of dust-free air, or in practice of filtered air, became increasingly important. It may be proved by aid of the inclosed steam-jet that even dust-free air must be an aggregate of nuclei, whose number grows rapidly larger as their diameter de cream, with a maximum for molecular dimensions; or that size is distributed among the molecules and quasi-molecules of dust-free air in a way somewhat recalling the distribution of velocity among mole cules, and that among particles larger and smaller the air molecule represents a condition of maximum occurrence. The fog-limit of dust free air is thus a variable quantity, depending eventually on the details of the method of filtration, or other process for rendering the air dust free. In fact, as the fog-limit rises, the coronas for a given exhaustion above the fog-limit increase in aperture, up to a limit. It should always be remembered that the particles or nuclei here in question are very small, even in comparison with ions.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • The Diffusion of Gases Through Liquids and Allied Experiments

    Carl Barus

Paperback (Forgotten Books, June 12, 2017)
Excerpt from The Diffusion of Gases Through Liquids and Allied ExperimentsThe experiments in Chapter I, made during a period of eleven years, with an ordinary glass balloon - shaped Cartesian diver with a small aperture, culminated in a plausible value of the diffusion coefficient (i. E., grams of gas or standard volume of gas transpiring per second across an orthogonal square centimeter, in case of a unit pressure gradient) of the imprisoned air through water, together with suggestive relations of the mean viscosity of the imaginary medium within the molecular pores of the liquid through which a single molecule of the gas virtually transpires. The investigation was therefore taken up on a more extended scale, for different pairs of gases. In Chapter II the diver is modified in form and the endeavor is made to obtain equal areas in the section of the cylindrical swimmer and the annular space without, in order to conform more closely to the equation of diffusion. The theory of the phenomenon and the errors involved are discussed. It appears that. Even for mixed gases, the volumes diffusing (if not the masses) are fully determinable. The accuracy essentially depends on the measure ment of absolute temperature and of barometric pressure and should there fore be of an order below I 27 30 per C. Or per centimeter of mercury. As the masses of gas contained are as a rule much less than 10 - 2 gram, even in case of air, the weight less than gram is determinable, showing the remarkable sensitiveness of the method. Moreover, in the region of constant temperature, the limit of sensitiveness is immensely greater.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
