It was the quiet after the storm. I sat up in bed - what had awakened me? I tried to sit still to listen, but my heart was pounding. Throwing off the covers I turned to look out at the rising moon shining brilliantly through the departing storm clouds, its silver lighting up my room.Goosebumps rose on my arms and I tried to rub them down. At the gym pool, I peered down from the diving board, watching as the rising moon cast its light upon the water. Moonlight trailed into the water and bubbles began to rise from the bottom, the pool thrilling to the moonlight as its water called to me.Caught up in the moonlight’s song, I dove in an arc into the still waters, shattering the moon’s reflection. Blissful waters greeted me, calling to me as one of its own. It was a thrilling experience as instead of the expected pool bottom, a sparkling undersea vista welcomed me.Jill is a 13-year-old mermaid raised all her life to be a ‘normal’ American girl. She lives in Boulder, Colorado and swims on the local swim team. On the night following her 13th birthday, she unexpectedly finds herself in the Pacific Ocean after a dip in the pool, in the gym she calls home.In this book of discovery, of what it means to be a mermaid, Jill goes on a series of adventures that help her understand who she is. Along with her are her three friends, Melanie, Cleo and Lucy, who, unlike Jill, are normal American girls. Each girl differs in their interest in mermaids, and what that means for them personally. While Jill seeks to distance herself from the freak she’s become, she saves a drowning man, gets wisdom from an eagle and rides a shark. Somewhere during the journey, she discovers that being a mermaid isn't so bad, as long as she gets to be one with her friends.Mermaid Rising is the first in the Mermaid Adventures series, in which Jill and friends experience joy and tragedies through friendships and new alliances.

  • Reuben Medlicott, Vol. 1 of 3: Or, the Coming Man

    M. W. Savage

    Hardcover (Forgotten Books, )
Excerpt from Reuben Medlicott, Vol. 1 of 3: Or, the Coming ManBy way of argument to our first book, let it suffice to say, that the subject of our story (whom we deliberately refrain from styling its hero) is born herein; nor can there be a doubt that he made a speech upon the occasion, and one that was exceedingly well received by the audience, although it was altogether unpremeditated, and no report of it has been preserved. Escaping all the fatalities that often cut the mysterious thread of life while it is yet a short one, he graduates in the nursery with éclat, and, arriving at the green age of thirteen or fourteen, is sent to a public school, to him a momentous event, though, in itself, no startling or extra ordinary occurrence. Among our earliest acquaintances, as well as his, will be a reverend father and an accomplished mother; we shall pop upon the gentleman cultivating his cabbages, and surprise the lady in her white dimity, green spectacles, and blue stockings. Possibly, if the father had cultivated his cabbages less, and his son more, the latter might have succeeded as well as the early York did, or the brocoli. Possibly, too, if the mother's hose had been of another hue, it might have changed the complexion of the boy's fortunes. But a truce to possibilities. It is time for our overture, or prologue, to end, and the curtain rise upon the performance, such as it is for we know not well how to describe it, unless in the words of Polonius: Comedy, history, pastoral, pas toral - comical, comical historical-pastoral, scene undividable, or poem unlimited.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • Life Questions

    M. J. Savage

Paperback (Leopold Classic Library, Dec. 25, 2015)
About the Book The history of Christianity concerns the Christian religion, with its various denominations, from the life of Jesus Christ in the 1st century to the present. Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Christianity spread to all of Europe in the Middle Ages, and since the Renaissance, has expanded throughout the world and become the world's largest religion (with over 2 billion faithful). At first persecuted, but later embraced by the Roman Empire, the East-West Schism, or Great Schism of 1054, separated the Church into Western (Latin) and Eastern (Greek) branches, i.e., Western Catholicism (based on Rome) and Eastern Orthodoxy (based on Constantinople). The rise of Islam resulted in a number of Crusades fought by Christian Armies from Europe, whose aim was to re-capture and hold Jerusalem. In 1453, Constantinople fell to the Ottoman Empire, and Christianity was almost completely removed from the territory that now comprises Turkey. The three most important traditions that emerged from the Protestant Reformation (1521-1610) were the Lutheran, Reformed (Calvinist, Presbyterian, etc.), and Anglican traditions.About us Leopold Classic Library has the goal of making available to readers the classic books that have been out of print for decades.
