  • The Glugs of Gosh

    MP3 CD (IDB Productions, March 15, 2016)
Best known for his humorous poem "The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke", Clarence Michael James Stanlius Dennis, or C. J. Dennis, has written countless other works which have only recently gained recognition from the literary critics. The Glugs of Glosh was written and published in 1917, at a time when Dennis was one of the most prosperous poets in Australian history. He had managed to sell his earlier work "The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke" in over 65,000 copies in the first year alone. Success followed with The Glugs Of Glosh, a work that is seen today as highly critical of Australian society and society in general. The poems describe the life of ordinary people in the City of Gosh, as well as the quest for Glug. The Quest for Glug is a seemingly pointless adventure only a Gosh from the City of Gosh would embark on. Readers are warned at the beginning of the book that anyone meeting a Gosh should take extra precautionary measures. Apparently, the advice is taken from an Old Gosh poem as well, where the advice consists of taking three hardy hairs from a rabbit rug, blowing two of them to the south and west, burning the 3rd one and then swallowing the remains. However, the advice seems pointless, as the encountered Gosh will climb a tree, and he would then need to have his toes tickled in the hope that the reader won't "come to blows". A satirical work exploring nonsense politics, megalomania, hypocrisy and so-called social issues, The Glugs of Gosh is an important poem which should be taken with a large grain of salt. And for those wishing to embark on the Quest for Glug, they should be weary of the road, lest they come to blows with someone from Gosh, if they don't have the three rabbit hairs with them.

    MP3 CD (IDB Productions, March 15, 2016)
The Glugs of Gosh is a volume of poems written by Australian poet C. J. Dennis. Well-known for his humorous poems, Dennis is not only one of the most well-known Australian writers, but also a master of satire - with these poems, he provides deep thoughts and substance, formulated in witty language. Published in 1917, The Glugs of Gosh includes 14 poems. The poet himself considered the volume to be his finest, but the poems somehow failed to bring him the success he expected, mostly because the satirical remarks come in the company of allusions that have been wrapped in too thick of a veil to make the desired impact on the audience. The verses are, of course, as full of allusions today as they were when they were first published and contemporary readers may find them complicated to decipher, but the obscurity is insignificant compared to the humor and wit that emanates from the verses. C. J. Dennis was born Clarence Michael James Stanislaus Dennis, in 1876. He published his first poem at the age of 19, but he became a professional journalist only a few years later, in 1897. He rose to success with his volume of poetry entitled The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke published in 1916 - volume that sold more than 60,000 copies during the first year and made Dennis one of the richest poets in the country. Dennis expected The Glugs of Gosh to be just as successful as his first volume, but the book met only moderate success and so did his later work, too. He continued to work as a journalist, though, serving as staff poet for a broadsheet newspaper called the Melbourne Herald from 1922 onwards. He published a total of eleven volumes of poetry between 1913 and 1935. He died in 1938 and is today considered to be one of the most famous Australian poets.
