  • The Landing of the Pilgrims

    James Daugherty

Paperback (Random House Books for Young Readers, Feb. 12, 1981)
Learn how and why the Pilgrims left England to come to America! In England in the early 1600s, everyone was forced to join the Church of England. Young William Bradford and his friends believed they had every right to belong to whichever church they wanted. In the name of religious freedom, they fled to Holland, then sailed to America to start a new life. But the winter was harsh, and before a year passed, half the settlers had died. Yet, through hard work and strong faith, a tough group of Pilgrims did survive. Their belief in freedom of religion became an American ideal that still lives on today. James Daugherty draws on the Pilgrims' own journals to give a fresh and moving account of their life and traditions, their quest for religious freedom, and the founding of one of our nation's most beloved holidays; Thanksgiving.

Allie Sheridan’s world is falling apart. Her brother’s run away from home. Her parents ignore her. And she’s just been arrested. Again. This time her parents have had enough. They send Allie to Cimmeria Academy - far away from her London friends. The school is beautiful, and filled with gorgeous, ultra-wealthy teens who travel by private jet, and were raised by nannies. And there's Carter, a brooding loner with whom she feels an instant connection. But when Allie is attacked late one night, the school suddenly begins to feel like a very dangerous place. Allie finds out that nothing at Cimmeria is what it seems. And that she is not who she thought she was…What people are saying about Night School‘Imagine a mixture of Hogwarts and Mallory Towers but filled with murder instead of magic. That is what you get. This book blew me away… The truth behind Night School really amazed me and it is definitely something I haven’t read before… This is definitely not a book to read whilst you are busy, as you will find yourself cursing at your lack of time to finish it. A chilling, nerve racking, nail biting thriller that left me wanting more.’ Serendipity Reviews‘…one of the best books I have read this year… If you love C.L. Stone’s (Ghost Bird and The Academy) series, you will enjoy reading Night School – Genesis!’ The Avid Reader‘What a brilliant debut novel. I absolutely cannot wait to jump headfirst into the sequel. If you trust me at all, YOU WILL READ THIS.’ Read Me Bookmark Me Love Me'Night School is dramatic and full of great characters, the perfect blend of suspense and romance.' Sophie McKenzie‘C.J. Daugherty does a brilliant job of keeping the truth just out of reach from the reader by offering many different, plausible possibilities. I love books that make me think about where the plot is going even though I never quite get it right. While it’s fun to guess, it’s more fun to be surprised…’ Pretty Books‘New series alert!! *flashing red light* This is the series to look out for... Cimmeria Academy (I need me somebody to tell me how to pronounce it!) has mystery, murder and some mayhem and boys, boys, boys!!(so very important, hee..hee) and of course the bitchy girl... An awesome start to this series.... my mind boggles where it will be going as there is mystery, mystery, mystery.’ Novels on the Run Blog‘Let me be absolutely clear on this, Night School is pure awesome sauce, just not what you would have expected from the title. First of all, it’s not some silly paranormal YA. More of a murder mystery with few good old conspiracy theories and secret societies thrown in. Secondly, can I just gush about Allie and Carter? *insert gushing now* I haven’t read about such two gorgeous level-headed and mature teenagers since Brightest Kind of Darkness by P.T.Michelle. Absolutely loved this book and highly recommend it to everyone! Nocturnal Book Reviews

  • Of Courage Undaunted: Across the Continent with Lewis & Clark

    James Daugherty

Paperback (Beautiful Feet Books, Jan. 1, 2008)
Newbery and Caldecott Medal winner James Daugherty has applied his literary and artistic skill to bringing to life the remarkable expedition of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on their 3555-mile trek from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean. Taken largely from original accounts of the expedition, Daugherty has written in his simple, forceful, and lyrical way to evoke the drama and pathos of what was one of American's most daring journeys of discovery. Commissioned in 1803 by President Thomas Jefferson to explore and open up this vast territory, Lewis and Clark felt it was the realization of a lifelong dream. Against the hardships of the wilderness, possible attack by hostile Indians, sudden blizzards and terrifying natural obstacles, these two men led the Corps of Discovery ably and nobly to complete their mission. Their Corps included American Indians from the Sioux, Mandan, Shoshone, Clatsop and Chopunnish tribes. Sacajawea, the only woman on the trip, was a Shoshone woman who contributed invaluable service as interpreter and guide. Daugherty's evocative sepia and black ink illustrations depict individuals of humor, vitality, passion, and strength.

What people are saying about Night School‘Just the other day I was sitting here, chatting with a friend and shamelessly making fun of boarding school books (with a few exceptions, of course), and now I am forced to eat my words. Or just add Night School to that very short list of exceptions. I adore Cimmeria Academy. I adore the idea behind it, I adore the teachers and I desperately want to be an advanced Night School student. (Only I’m not very athletic so that would never, ever work.) • The Magna Charta

    James Daugherty

Paperback (Beautiful Feet Books, March 1, 1998)
It was Ben Franklin who coined the phrase, "Rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God," and if any historical drama fulfills that maxim, it is surely the saga of King John and the drafting of the Magna Charta. Out of the rich turbulence of English history, June 15, 1215 stands apart as a significant milestone in the progress of human liberty. On that day, a brave band of barons, led by the noble Stephen Langton, and calling themselves the Army of God, stood up to the wicked King John and demanded that he restore the ancient laws of England that he had so unabashedly trampled underfoot. The era is a rollicking one filled with colorful characters like Robin Hood and his Merry Men, Richard the Lionheart, Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, and many more. Newbery and Caldecott medal-winner James Daugherty brings his own passion for freedom's story to this wonderful saga of the thirteenth century. Daugherty devotes the last part of the book to a history of the "documents" of freedom, what he calls the "Children of the Magna Charta", demonstrating how liberty has progressed over the ages. Two-color illustrations by the author enhance the drama of this text.
