  • Bengali Girls Don’t: Based on a True Story

    L.A. Sherman

eBook (Blue Sari Press, July 15, 2011)
“Bengali Girls Don’t” by L.A. Sherman shares the author’s journey from her birth in a remote village during Bangladesh’s liberation war to her rebellious days in England as a young girl in the 1980s to her eventual forced marriage. The story, which reads like a cultural exposĂ© on Bengali culture, starts in the summer of 1971, in East Pakistan, with the author still inside her mother’s womb. With the Pakistani soldiers closing in, Sherman’s parents and two brothers had to flee through the forest when the soldiers raided their village to survive. After liberation, Sherman’s parents moved to England where she grew up wanting to be like the English girls, able to go out here and there, have friends over and have boyfriends. But when her parents caught on to her un-Islamic ways, they tricked her into going to Bangladesh so that they could marry her off. At fifteen, she was forced to marry a man old enough to be her father, had his baby, and suffered for four years under a domineering mother-in-law until unexpectedly winning the OP-1 visa lottery for America. “The book is unique in that it really gives to the western reader an idea of what Bangladeshi home life is really like and how easy it is to get caught between two cultures.”She was inspired to write the story due to the lack of English language books on Bengali lifestyles. “Sure, some authors have written about our way of living,” she says, “but those are by people who’ve never lived it; I lived it, I breathed it, my heart was emptied out because of it.”She goes on to say that the book is about heartache and irony. About broken dreams. And how the life we choose is not always the life that chooses us. “It’s like ‘Brick Lane’ on steroids,” Sherman says. “Or the Bengali version of ‘East is East.’"Gripping . . . sort of reminds you of Elizabeth Smart or Jaycee Dugard."--Zakariya Mikal, Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library System

  • Sausalito Night Music

    Sherman L Smith

Paperback (Sherman Smith, Jan. 9, 2019)
The sound of Michael O'Dea's tenor saxophone echoed across the night skies and hills above Sausalito, California. For those who heard, it was haunting, mysterious, and heart-rendering, his soul seemingly speaking to the world. From his solitary perch on the roof of the Bayview Boarding House Michael's eyes were set on San Francisco where he had once been part of the music scene. Micheal knew how people saw him because he was remarkably ugly - his appearance enough to cause the Devil to scurry home for more appealing company. Michael never thought that he would be kissed by a woman; let alone, marry a woman as beautiful as Mollie. That she loves him challenged his manhood, making his loneliness even harder to bare. There are those in the boarding house who do not welcome him because he is ugly; a freak. It is the ugly side of their discontent that helps Michael overcome his own anguish, finding the courage to stand up for what is right, for Mollie, and to help new friends rise above their own. A Catholic priest who has lost his faith. The boarding house manager, who had been pushed down the stairs, now trapped in a wheelchair. A fisherman and refugee from Equator wanted for a crime he did not commit. A grizzly bear sized thug who struggles to keep his boss, an addict who suffers from PTSD, from his murderous rages. A middle aged woman who takes pride in making everyone her enemy. A superstitious elderly woman who fights against the ravages of age with unwavering spirit. A musically gifted transgender savant. A timid salesman, who partners with a charismatic conman, who rob the thieves, as they rob the luxurious Del Monte Lodge at Pebble Beach. The Bayview House sold, eviction notices given, the conman uses the ill-gotten money to buy a larger hotel and nightclub where Michael's music is no longer a lonely serenade.
