  • Service and Sport on the Tropical Nile: Some Records of the Duties and Diversions of an Officer Among Natives and Big Game During the Re-Occupation of the Nilotic Province

    C. A. Sykes

Hardcover (Forgotten Books, Feb. 27, 2018)
Excerpt from Service and Sport on the Tropical Nile: Some Records of the Duties and Diversions of an Officer Among Natives and Big Game During the Re-Occupation of the Nilotic ProvinceIN venturing on such a subject as Uganda, after the appearance of Sir Harry Johnston's magnificent volumes upon that interesting country, I think I ought to say that I have an object quite apart from his. That author has minutely described the people and animals of those regions. I would modestly make some of these people speak, and give those animals a being, in so far as they affect man, especially the sportsman. Sir Harry has shown in glowing colours the splendid scenery, the mountains, the rivers, and the forests: I would but show the manner in which these affect the traveller. I write in no scientific spirit, but shall have done all I essay if I can depict in words the ordinary vicissitudes which attend a man when he cuts himself off for a time from civilisation. I must apologise for the erratic nature of my narrative, and that none of my facts are correlated. I can only say that events do not occur in any particular order, nor are one's ideas connected in regular sequence. I have written them down as they occurred.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
