Over the course of two thousand years, the birth of a child in Bethlehem became one of the most familiar stories in human history. The gospels according to Matthew and according to Luke contain the substance of what was known. On one level, they are narratives of ordinary people living simple lives caught up, mostly unawares, in one of mankind’s most important events. At a deeper level, the ultimate purpose of these events was profound. These first days were the prelude for an unfolding design, ultimately affecting the lives of virtually everyone on earth.
