JUBAL'S COUNTRY STOREOne day in August, Jubal was sitting in his customary position, which was; sitting on a tall stool, leaning back against the wall, hands jammed in the top of his coveralls, one foot propped up on the counter by the cash register, and the other foot on a rung of the stool. Now and then he would swap feet.Jubal frowned. âThat snack shelf just ainât right.â When someone bought something, he knew where the gap would be on the shelf. He would fill that gap the next time he was a mind to.He started at the left end of the shelf; Moon Pies, Coconut Snowballs, Cheese Crackers, Hersheyâs, Milky Ways, Mars, and Musk⌠Thatâs it! There are three Musketeers missing! He didnât remember selling those, and he could always tell you everything he had sold during the day, if anyone ever asked. Well, maybe he did forget selling them. He got three more out of a box in the cooler and placed them on the shelf.Three days later, while sitting in his customary position: âDad gum! Thereâre three Musketeers missing again! I know I didnât sell um. I know I didnât. But theyâre gone, theyâre gone. Lord ah mercy, could we have a thief right here in Gibbons County? This could be serious, ser-e-ous.â
