It’s the fall of 1934 and Angelica Osgood, the teenage daughter of a railroad tycoon, feels trapped in her hometown of Toledo, Ohio. Her mother died when she was twelve and her father is forcing her to marry a deep-pocketed investor. She sees no choice but to run away to California, where her mother’s relatives live. To get there, however, she’ll need help.Enter the Kid. The Kid and his pals are among the quarter of a million teenagers forced during the Great Depression to eek out an existence on the freights, riding from city to city and evading the railroad police. Attracted by Angelica’s beauty and her compassion for the down-and-out, the Kid teaches her how to ride the trains, beg a meal, and, in essence, become a tramp like him. But their journey faces incredible odds. The Kid’s best friend, a gypsy tomboy named Keja, who has secretly loved him for many years, plots against Angelica. Meanwhile, Angelica’s father commissions a sadistic, one-eyed railroad cop to hunt them down. As their love grows and the law closes in, Angelica and the Kid must choose between the road and the family life they once renounced.
