  • "Good Eating, Mr. President!": The Story of the First Unofficial Thanksgiving Turkey Pardon

    Brandon Smith

    (, Jan. 25, 2020)
One of the most iconic holiday events held by American presidents is the annual Thanksgiving turkey pardoning ceremony. However, most don't realize this tradition has only been an official White House event since 1989. Turkeys and other animals have been presented to US presidents since the late 1800s. Some given to them have even been eaten. The idea of giving a "pardon" or sparing a turkey from being eaten on this holiday first came out of a coincidence created by President John F. Kennedy in 1963, just days before his assassination. Kennedy's already infamous kind and generous character, as well as his legacy helped keep the idea of sparing the birds in a national tradition ever year alive for decades further.
