"...He and Tempest fell on their knees and tugged at the box, but its weight was considerable, and they could not lift it out until Jim gave them a hand. It was a small chest made of oak or some other hard wood, encircled with solid bands of iron which had almost rusted through in places...."Ralph Henry Barbour (1870 – 1944) was an American author, who primarily wrote adventure books. In 1918 he published the book "Lost Island" which was a "Treasure Island" style adventure book and was hailed as one of the best books of 1918 by critics.Dave Haliard at sixteen runs away to sea. He comes of sailor stock and cannot resist the call of salt water. His first voyage takes him to Australia, where he leaves the ship to try his luck on a small trading vessel. He is shipwrecked. Thru this experience he makes friends with Bruce Tempest, a Wandering adventurer. Tempest listens eagerly to Dave's tales of the lost "Hatteras," a ship reputed to be carrying a fortune in platinum, and the two scheme and plan till a way is found to go in search of her. Another man gets wind of their plan and tries to outwit them and there is a merry chase and some fighting before the two young men find the wrecked ship laden with metal more precious than gold.In this book Haliard enters upon a series of stirring adventures, including shipwreck on a desert island, the search for lost treasure and a sharp tussle for the treasure when it is found. The story is one of the best of 1918.
  • The Half-Back

    Ralph Henry Barbour

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, May 18, 2014)
"How's craps, Country?" "Shut up, Bart! he may hear you." "What if he does, ninny? I want him to. Say, Spinach!" "Do you suppose he's going to try and play football, Bart?" "Not he. He's looking for a rake. Thinks this is a hayfield, Wall." The speakers were lying on the turf back of the north goal on the campus at Hillton Academy. The elder and larger of the two was a rather coarse-looking youth of seventeen. His name was Bartlett Cloud, shortened by his acquaintances to "Bart" for the sake of that brevity beloved of the schoolboy. His companion, Wallace Clausen, was a handsome though rather frail-looking boy, a year his junior. The two were roommates and friends. "He'd better rake his hair," responded the latter youth jeeringly. "I'll bet there's lots of hayseed in it!"
