Kids love the Country Cat Family! They are a real cat family who owns a photographer/writer who captured their antics as they walked with him in the woods over a number of seasons. He wove their images into a series of children's stories and enhanced his images with art renderings. In this book of 43 large colorful illustrations, the Country Cat Family wait for the cold weather to lift. Palamino and Carmella, the young cats, especially, wonder what adventures might wait for them in the woods. Until then, Dad, or King Tam, notes winter is coming after seeing his old friend, Barney the Barn Owl perched on a limb. King Tam settles in to tell his wife Winkie and the kids Carmella and Palamino that winter would soon be upon them. No chance of going out to play in the woods until it has passed. So images show unique pictures of the entire cat family playing, running, sending letters at the computer and being close to each other as each waits in their own way for the cold weather to pass.Ultimately, it finally does, setting the young reader up for Book Two, Palamino Gets Lost!

  • Becoming Kirrali Lewis

    Jane Harrison

Paperback (Magabala Books Aboriginal Corporation, March 1, 2016)
Set within the explosive cultural shifts of the 1960s and 1980s, Becoming Kirrali Lewis chronicles the journey of a young First Nations Australian teenager as she leaves her home town in rural Victoria to take on a law degree in the city of Melbourne in 1985. Adopted at birth by a white family, Kirrali doesn’t question her cultural roots until a series of life-changing events force her to face up to her true identity. Her decision to search for her biological parents sparks off a political awakening that no one sees coming, least of all Kirrali herself as she discovers her mother is white and her father is a radical black activist. Narrative flashbacks to the 1960s, where Kirrali’s biological mother, Cherie, is rebelling against her parent’s strict conservatism sees her fall into a clandestine relationship with a black man. Unmarried and pregnant, Cherie’s traumatic story of an unforgiving Australian society give meaning to Kirrali’s own rites of passage nearly twenty years later. The generational threads of human experience are the very things that will complete her. If only she can let go.

    Ben Harrison

language (King Tam Productions, March 18, 2015)
This book has 49 exciting action pictures of Carmella and Palamino in the woods--a great resource for talking about this second story as you read with your child or class. But first, this is how the book fits in with the last and the story:In the previous picture book, The Country Cat Family and the Cold Weather!, we met the members of the family and how they spent their time in anticipation of the warmer season when Palamino and Carmella could go outside and explore the woods. In this book, they do that with almost CATastrophic consequences! In the process oflearning how to climb trees, chasing bugs and each other, running, jumping over limbs and a host of other pictured activities, Palamino manages to get lost in the woods, inspite of his parents watching over both Carmella and him. If only he had paid attention to Dad! Carmella steps up to save the day. Bravely, she volunteers to go into the woods and find her brother. Though she is scared at times, she discovers things about herself that she thought she could never do, like jumping over trees and navigating through the woods. When she finds Palamino, she leads him back home, but not before he tells her he is going to reveal a BIG SECRET later that evening. That is the surprise climax of the story in book three.
